coombe junction - Back on TRACK...

Update - Earlier this week, I returned from work to find a package outside the front door - the rituals of opening said packages were recently covered in someone elses blog and I must admit, one nice thing about ordering from Hattons is they still wrap parcels like this...

more on the contents a bit later...but first back to matters in hand...

As a break from loco detailing, I have started the track for Board 3, which will comprise both Moorswater dries and the viaduct. Following my recent experiences with turnout construction with KIAB, and not wanting to lose motivation, I decided to build the turnout with PCB and code 40 Bullhead and use EASITRAC for the plain track. Most of the track in the dries area will eventually be covered by the flush concrete apron for loading/unloading so the thought of all that time soldering individual sleepers...and then covering most of it up again  For the apron, I am thinking to do this in thin card on card/foamboard formers as I think the card will just sit on the edge of the outside chairs of the EASITRAC and keep the rail slightly proud for cleaning purposes.

The frog, straight and curved rails are in place and this time using 2FS straight lengths, the turnout was built off a sheet of grey cardboard with the rails allowed to overhang as necessary (The first turnout I built for CJ resulted in lots of unnecessary extra joints as I built it as a stand alone piece) The track will need to be packed to the level of the adjacent board 2 and apart from adding the switch blades and check rails, I can hopefully complete the track to this board, as soon as the components I ran out of arrive.

The current thinking for the concealed loco run around is a kind of 'loco lift' cassette which can be removed and spun 180 by the operator as I am only putting DG's at one end of the motive power.

Overall view...track temporarily in position...

PCB turnout...don't zoom in on my shocking soldering skills...

And finally...the package...first up is Bachfar 37238 which will be converted to 37207 (pre William Cooksworthy/Cornish Railways) with detailed front end and snow ploughs...

37238...prior to surgery...

And view onto dries area...

and secondly...I couldn't resist it...a Bachfar 66 in Freightliner livery. Although I am a strict BR Blue man ;), so many of the images of Moorswater these days include the 66's on the cement trains. Although it will in reality never run on the layout from Moorswater through to Coombe Junction, I thought it might be interesting to have a 66 so I can photograph this board in isolation of the others to represent the location from more recent times as little seems to have changed at Moorswater dries since ECC gave way to become a cement terminal...

Bachfar 66 - It's kinda growing on me, this loco and livery...

You'll have to get some nice Dapol Blue Circle Cement Cargowaggons to go with that 66 now smile.gif

Nice to see moorswater dries taking shape - the bit I've been looking forward to .

Im going back to rmweb3 to read the layout history from the start as I begin my little 2mm plan. I hope somone does 2mm scale instantersblink.gif

You could. The method described in the files area of the Yahoo! groups for making links for couplings could be adapted to make instanters. Unless you need the ears on the lower part to use a scale shunters pole? They could be problematic!

I have to echo Jon, this has to be the board I have always been looking forward to. Loving the 66, I've been tempted to buy one (just to play with, the model is very nice).

I'm impressed with your progress, after Kyle I thought you would be taking a break. Top work that man!

Jon - Many thanks - the other 2 boards are in some serious need of ruralness (?) as I need to get on with trees etc...so to avoid that...I thought I would tackle Board 3 and a touch of industrialness (?) ;)

In terms of the wagons...now your tempting me to spend more money...for what was supposed to be a one off purchase...perhaps some PCA's first...I believe Bachmann are doing a Blue Circle Cement one soon...

Bryn - Thanks - Agreed the 66 is a nice model - Its duties will be restricted to running around PCA's in the dries...so I need to make sure my loco lift is longer than the (as planned for) 37's

Not sure where this burst of enthusiasm has come from...the bcn hot and sunny days normally have an effect on my modelling mojo...and Kyle is well and truly back in its box and hasn't been out since the exhibition...I think its the 2FS Expo which is driving me on...I really look foward to an exhibition dedicated to 2mm as I may not get a weekend pass again for a long time...okay, frothing over!

Evening - yes - Bachmann have done a handfull of plain grey PCAs over the last few years , but theyre hard to find now- in particular the straight barrel PCAs, which seemed to be slightly more common at Moorswater -

Moorswater is a very versatile little place - wind the clock back a little from Freighliner and you'd see EWS 66s with VGAs and cargowaggons - although its not as well photographed as Freightliners operations, Its nice that pretty much all the stock you need , for whatever period is available off the shelf - or will be in the future , with the Dapol 121/122 . I dont think there is a definative clayhood RTR in any scale yet though..

Thanks for the advice on couplings - very helpful

Jon - I was looking at the Bachfar PCA's yesterday...some of the mouldings for the steps and roof look a little crude but overall shape seems ok.

Its ironic to think that the short wheelbase OOV Hoods would later get replaced by the longer Tigers etc - Even the thought of the 66 and the Cargowagons squeezing themselves around the tight curves from Liskeard and onwards to Moorswater, its no wonder the local residents complained sometimes of the squeaking wheels ;)

In terms of the hoods, Mevagissy models (I understand) do a clay open with ECC blue hood but it has a 10ft wheelbase which is why I have opted for the Parkwood models kit sitting on a 2FS 9ft chassis. Who knows, perhaps one day, Bachmann will scale down their 4mm version...won't hold my breath on that one. I did buy a Skytrex 7mm clay hood recently...but that's another story

The other reason for me to get the 66 and some PCA/Cargowagons, is I thought it might make the layout appeal to a younger generation of modellers. Whilst the current modern railway scene does not interest me as much as the corporate blue era (and to an extent, living outside the UK doesn't help with keeping in touch) I sense that the hobby today has some pretty stiff competition from the likes of Wii/Playstation and DS :(
