coombe junction - ....3...2...1...Brassed off!...

Update - The countdown refers to the 3 boards as earlier today I managed to erect the layout in its entire length on the dining room table and 'brassed off' refers to my wifes reaction as the layout momentarily took over our apartment

In order to break myself back into modelling since vacation I decided to prepare the backscenes, which need to be detachable if I am to be able to transport the layout back to the UK one day. The height had been determined as 300mm above track level from previous mock up models, and mainly to allow it to meet the extract of Moorswater viaduct which is 150ft high.

The backscenes are formed from two layers of grey artists card laminated together with PVA and are screw mounted to the IKEA shelf. A few small squares have been cut to allow me to slide the shelves back on the protruding wall supports and a few others will be cut to allow access to the turnout wire in tubes (only 2!), isolation switches (am still DC control!) and to access the run-a-round loco release at Moorswater.

The backscenes will be painted a pale grey/white colour as my previous experiences with a blue sky on Kyle left it looking like the front of a Club Med holiday brochure, so this time I will be going for something more subtle.

There is some tidying up along the front edge still, where I need to cut a layer of card to follow the profile of the landscape and the dries buildings at Moorswater and the front edge will then be finished in gunmetal grey paint.

I attach a few pics to show progress and to hopefully give an idea of the overall view of the layout.

Pete, that really will have the effect of a train in the landscape once finished... impressive once assembled... and whilst there's evidently quite a task ahead of you, it's good to know that its progressing ... looking forward to seeing this running one day wink.gif

Chocolates and flowers may save this one 'offence' - but it'll probably take a fortnights cruise around the Med if you want to keep the layout up for any length of time... :D

I love the clean lines and simplicity of the layout, but I guess you have a major job in front of you with that backscene - are you an artist per chance?

Keep it coming (even if it costs a fortune in domestic reparations) :P

Nick - Thanks - Actually, my wife is pretty cool about it all...having two young boys also helps, as they love to see the layout...and prod and poke it

Jon - Thanks also - Perhaps another 2 years work on it (I average one, sometimes two evenings per week of modelling) will bring it to 5 years since it was started.

Steve - Many thanks - It's gone past the chocolates and flowers stage I feel...Am no Artist either...most of the backscene will be sky and I will probably use a photoshop'd image below it to hint at landscape - I do need to plant about 50-75 trees in front of it too, which may help give a sense of depth.

Kris - Many thanks...I took a leaf out of your book in terms of erecting the whole layout and testing the temperature of the water ;)

Looking very good, Pete.

Hope to see more progress soon and hopefully, at some point in the future, the layout in the flesh!

Keep it up.

Cheers

Tony - Thanks - When I see it in its entirety like that, it seems absurd to try and fly it back to the UK...but, I keep that as a goal as its unlikely to ever get exhibited in Spain...can't compete with Barca ;)
