coombe junction - Runaround...Now!

Update - RIP Mike Reid, fellow Spanish resident whose game show I grew up with. De-light-ful...

Have been doing the sparks for Board 3 the last two nights to try and get the moorswater runaround working and I confess electrics is not my speciality. One would think that such a simple layout to wire with DC and a few isolating switches could not give many problems however I lost over an hour and a half of modelling time last night trying to solve a short, which in the end came down to a dodgy slide switch  - on the upside, the swear box has been replenished and can help fund the recent CDA extravagance.

During the summer I had to retire my trusty Gaugemaster handheld controller and I purchased a Morley Vesta following reading some good reviews. There are a few nice touches to it and although I will probably in theory only ever have one diesel in steam ;) it does come with 2 x 2M handheld walkabout controllers, handy for a 3.3m long layout. Initial testing seems to be nice and responsive however a switched centre off would be nice as a few locos have flirted with the edge of the baseboard during testing purposes :O

In summary, I now have a runaround working, and I hoping to work on the mini traverser tonight and then try and post a short video sometime to demonstrate the DG coupling at the end of the line using the permanent concealed magnets.

A twin track controller Pete, you must have a bigger plan in mind laugh.gif.

It's for shunting on the 265mm length Moorswater viaduct :P

Very interesting Pete, I'm thinking of a new controller too - so will be interested to hear of your experiences in due course. That video of the DG coupling at work sounds promising too :good_mini:

Mikkel - thanks - the DG couplings worked fine in tests last night but I hope the rolling stock doesn't get stage fright when the camera starts rolling...

Ah, that's better... I can see the image now... IT refusal at luchtime me thinks. The controller looks very neat, if only for that reason, I could see why you chose itB) .

Looking forward to seeing the next posting on the working couplings.

Ah, Runaround... yes, I endured that too. Runarouuuunnnnddddddddddddddddddddddd........... Nowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!

Evening Pete,

That controller looks a bit flash!!!B) Like some expensive British built hi-fi equipment.

I'm looking forwards to the DG coupling video as well. Need to put some of these on my stock.

Anyway, now where's that FGW Class 153?

Jon - thanks - the vid will be on hold as this evenings modelling went a bit pear shaped...my ideas for transfering power to the sliding traverser didn't work as hoped - I need to rethink that one first

Runaround / Grange Hill / Tuckers Luck...blimey...really showing my age now!

Mark - It does look rather swish I must admit - I like the ability to plug in a walkabout if required and at around 70 notes I thought was pretty good value for money.

In terms of Mike Reid, for me Eastenders was never the same when Frank Butcher left.......oh, and his filthy stand up comedy routines do put a smile on in times of low :D

I like the controller. Is it suitable for 4mm?

Alex, hi

This one no, as it has been developed for N gauge motors I believe, but they do various others including 4 track control.

Check this

They sent it to Barcelona for me and it even had a two pin plug fitted, which I had forgotten to ask about in my email!

I've never had the courage to try uncouplng in N gauge but I look forward to seeing your results. The new modern image stuff runs so well that shunting layouts finally work properly for me but I really like the concept of hands off operation.

I know what you mean about saving up the swear box contents, if I put in a pound for every time I swore over a wiring error I could fund enough CDA's for St Blazey! The Peco ones are nice wagons but not cheap. How come even wiring up two sidings seems to go wrong for me!

On another note I've been meaning to ask for a while how you built the hoods for your clayhoods? I've build a few of the kits for the steam era but I'm stumped as to the hoods for the BR Blue era. Any advice gratefully recieved!

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your comments - vid coming soon...shot it this evening - Agreed that hands free shunting, when done well, is very satisfying.

In terms of my old hoods, I made a balsa wood former for the wagon and folded up some rigid silver foil (from a chinese takeaway style carton) around it, trimming as necessary and painting the ECC blue colour. For my next batch, I read somewhere that masking tape is a good option in terms of texture.

Alternatively, Mevagissey Models used to make a clay hood with a tarpaulin.

hth, Pete
