coombe junction - Taking (rolling) Stock...

Update - Just back from a flying visit to the UK to see my family, drop into the Uckfield model railway exhibition and collect the latest pile of railway bits accumulating at my UK address (aka my parents house) and I thought I would share them as part of my blog...

First up is 5 No Peco ECC CDA wagons which now gives me a rake of 8. I would have preferred to do my own weathering but I had them for a good price. These will receive new 2FS plain disc wheels and DG's to replace the rapidos with possibly 3 link chain between the rakes.

Next up is Classic Tractor Magazine :O

Not my new hobby, but whilst I was looking for information on Sharon the Industrial shunter the other month, someone on the DEMU forum suggested I take a look at that months magazine as there was something of interest. Sure enough, an article on the County 1474 tractor which was modified at both end to shunt the cement wagons around at Moorswater - a nice article and a few more pics for my research :D

Talking of Sharon...

Another tip off was to check out this book on Industrial shunters in Cornwall as there are a couple of pics of Sharon inside...once again, I do like to try and gather as many articles and books on the line and area I am modelling...

Penultimately, another John Vaughan classic, purchased as it contains a few more pics of Moorswater viaduct. Would love to spend a day or so looking at all JV's slides as I know he has a soft spot for the Liskeard - Looe line...

And finally, there is this posing next to some 2FS track :O

Many thanks to Marc Smith for putting me in touch with a DEMU member who was keen to sell his 7mm scale Bachmann Brassworks 08 shunter...and I have to say it's a beautiful model. It's for my 7mm dabbling with my Wenfordbridge layout and although my focus is still on completing CJ, I am collecting odd bits and pieces to put aside for when my optical vision finally decides that 2FS is beyond me...managed to fly it back in my hand luggage no problem, but didn't quite manage to sneak it pass Internal Domestic Security though...I will post an update on my 7mm layout topic in a few days.

Lastly, I collected a CD of images of Moorswater kindly taken by Mark (46444) which will help me with getting the buildings started for the final board. My aim is to try and advance the scenics on this board considerably by Christmas, which is only 68 days away, so my two sons keep reminding me ;)

Pete, looks like you had a successful trip back to blighty. Sorry we couldn't meet up... and sorry that I didn't make it to the show ... for several reasons. Looks like you've some good stuff to be getting on with. Enjoy.

I assume you got all of this into your hand luggage because you left everything else behind. The brass 08 does look nice, the excuse, of "no dear it's not new, my parents have been looking after it for me since I left home" (don't mention which home) didn't wash then

Jon - thanks - yep...shame that...perhaps at BHMRC's 60th anniversary exhibition next year then...I will be in 'punter' not 'exhibitor' mindset for that...

Kris - I have done this trip a few times now in the last 3 years so am becoming something of an expert at squeezing all and sundry into an Ikea hand luggage suitcase which fits neatly within Easyjet's strict policy...made even easier though if you wear the same clothes for 3 days consecutively too

Looking good Pete,

Trips like this are well worth making if you pick up goodies like this!!! B) It's a shame I never took any phots of Sharon. She was in the shed. I'm looking forward to seeing how you go about making a County tractor. Photos Mk 2 should be with you this weekend all being well.

Same clothes for three days! Hope you had a bumper can of Lynx!

Cheers,

Mark

Hey Mark,

Thanks - I think Sharon (the EE shunter) was transfered away from Moorswater some years ago and the tractor was her replacement...which may also be affectionately known as Sharon to the operators?

BTW, who needs Lynx when you can just turn your clothes inside out ;)

IIRC Sharon was transferred away when ECC stopped drying at Moorswater. I think she was transfered to one of their other sites well away from Cornwall (Quidhampton rings a bell but no idea where or what that is). I presume the tractor was brought when the cement deliveries started which was a couple of years later.

I quite like the look of the weathered Peco CDAs but the wife wouldn't let me buy them! She couldn't get the concept of why I'd pay more for the dirty wagons! I'm still trying to work up the courage to weather mine, scared if ruining the finish.

When my parents moved house I was presented with a large box of old modelling stuff I'd left at home. Mostly not v good but some surprises and good memories

looking forward to seeing a rake of CDAs creep out the works!

Tom - thanks - I think you are right - the tractor being drafted in as a replacement for Sharon.

The Peco pre weathered CDA's are not bad although they seem to have been weathered with clay dust and a little brake dust - I would be expecting to see a little bit more clay dust on the underframes - a little project for sometime perhaps...

I forgot to mention in my OP that the CDA's are only for use when I photograph / operate the Moorswater board independantly as my layout is set in clay hood era - that said, the 37 currently sitting at the head of the 8 CDA's looks quite tasty...

Someone (Laurie Adams ?) made a working shunting tractor in this scale a number of years back. I think it used an X,Y traveser under the baseboard and ran using a magnet like the faller road system. It was impressive: you should look it up...

Rich, hi - Thanks...will do so...

I did spend an afternoon trying to find a tractor at this scale but with no luck...I must admit I would rather try and scratchbuild the shunter Sharon before taking on a tractor :O

Update! Through the wonders of Google I have discovered that ECC Quidhampton was a calcium carbonate (chalk) quarry in Whiltshire, the last trains appear to have run last year. I'm not sure how to post links but this website www.markfew.fotopic.net has some photos including ones with a blue shunter that looks suspiciously like Sharon. Look at the Wylye Valley & Salisbury collection. Hope this helps

PS i agree that the 37 and CDAs look good. I try to have st least one set of correct stock avaliable for my new era (1986ish) but allow interlopers to run if I can stretch the history to make it seem plausible, hence my rake of CDAs occassionally pass waiting clayhoods!

Tom - Thanks - A great find - I instantly thought it was Sharon...but having looked at a few phots of her at Moorswater I am not so sure...there is something different about the bonnet...unless of course she has been modified since she left Moorswater...

Those Peco CDAs do look wonderful - a rake of them and a RfD liveried 37 would look great on a scenic cornish CC layout.... oh yeah! ;) Cool. The 7mm stuff looks great as well, is that a Skytrex hood? They look superb as well :) Sounds like a successful trip any how.

James, Hi and thanks.

Yep, the 7mm hood is Skytrex...a bit 'plasticy' in places but overall a very nice model - there are some more photos of it on my 7mm layout topic thread, which will be updated by the end of this week...it could get addictive this 7mm stuff...which is why its been packed back into its boxes...for now ;)

Sharon was a 0-4-0 the shunter shown in every picture that i have seen at Quidhampton was a 0-6-0

I think you hit the nail on the head Kris - its not Sharon...perhaps its one of her sisters...more like a sentinel?...

I really do like the look of those Peco CDA's....But I MUST be strong and resist

They are a bit expensive to buy a rakes worth - arn't they??

Oh! I've just had a thought as to how to run them "sort-of prototypically" in very short rakes B)

Oh well. There goes my career as a detective! thought that was abut easy. Will have to keep looking for more clues! I'll let you know if I locate any more potential pics

Mickey - Thanks - I think I parted with around 12 notes for each wagon...but I bought the weathered ones from a separate source from the unweathered so that helps spread the cost a little - bit pricey as you say though...thankfully I won't need a rake of silver bullets

Tom - No worries - Thanks to point me to that site though - some good reference material there...am always happy to wile away a few hours looking at train phots

Well I seem to have looked at CJ for too long now.......Im on Hattons looking at a few CDAs - and a couple of Bulllets....and a few other things!!!

Go on Mickey :D...I held off on the CDA's but I am glad I finally got some...I also have an order waiting to be fulfilled from Hattons on a mixed rake of PCA cement wagons for Moorswater post china clay era...that is...when Farish finally release them

Link to comment

Well the initial order list is drawn up - half a dozen CDAs and a couple of Bullets looking dirty and a few VGAs...and strangely enough probably a few cement PCAs too!!

No Traction yet 'cos Im not sure of the era intended, apart from post 88 obviously ;)

All i need now is for someone to whisper in my ear that 2mm FS is the way to go for an idea that will probably involve a lot of track eventually

EDIT: I just seen the Farish 150 in RR...thats that sorted then!!

Just in case anyone wishes to see that 7mm 08 in context, I updated this layout topic last night.

Right, back to 2FS now...
