37/7 Progress

Pugsley

An even greater lack of imagination with the title for tonights update, on the plus side it is a little more descriptive of what's actually occuring! :D

Since last time Hornby class 50 buffers have been substituted for the Bachmann ones, which are too spindly IMO. To do this, twist the heads slightly to the right and pull, the head should come out with the spring. Drill down the Bachmann buffer housing with a 2.3mm drill, which will loosen the bond of the adhesive holding them in place. A little tug with a pair of pliers should bring the housing away - the Hornby buffers are glued in the holes left.

The bogies have also been narrowed and the sideframes moved up slightly. Cut both sideframes off with a razor saw, inboard of the brake shoes, then file 0.3mm off each side of the keeper plate moulding. When reassembling, glue the sidframes back on so that the bottom of the brake shoe assembly is level with where they attach to the keeper plate. This moves the sideframes up about 1mm, and narrows the bogies by 1mm, improving the appearance.

Next up - the paint shop!

Are you not doing any underframe detailing on this one?

Adding the chains is a pain - and I've got some finer chain on back order with MG Sharp - the extra pipework around the fuel tank is dead easy and makes a big visual difference... and the sand pipes are just 0.5mm wire from a stripped down USB cable. This is glued to the bogie and then cut off in line with the chassis - so it appears to join but can move as the loco runs along curves. Pretty effective in practice :)

EDIT - and I use Hornby 31 buffers on my 37s :)

Eventually, perhaps. I'm trying to get this completed in time to appear at Showcase, which is approaching scarily rapidly!

I'm also moving away from extensive detailing in 4mm scale - a lot of small details are too fragile and easily knocked off, not ideal under exhibition conditions. However, the 7mm stock is going to be as detailed as possible :)

The handbrake chains will be added - I've got the Shawplan parts and the chain already, but that'll be it for the time being.

Can I ask you what was the BR green paint you have used, that is one of the best colour matches I have seen.

Hiya Martin,

I'm just catching up with things on here. Did you get this one finished?

Keep up the good work!

Cheers,

Hi Wayne. It's kind of finished, in as much as it's numbered and decalled. It just needs weathering and the finishing touches now - I'll put some pics up when it's done.
