Keeping things civil.

Well since running out of various bits and bobs required to keep making rolling stock I have returned to working on Avonwick.

I have been tidying up the baseboards. This has been done by giving the end boards a skin of hardboard. This has gone reasonably well and these boards now look a hugh amount better.

I have then been playing with some insulation foam that I had initially purchased to build the boards with (this was a dismal failure sad.gif ) . In adding this I have also had to create the tunnel mouth and build the bridge that hides the hinges that join the board. The tunnel mouth has been built out of plasticard. The bridge was built out of card. Adding the tunnel has meant that I needed to do a bit of ballasting, oh joy! The tunnel is based on Sorley tunnel north end (This disused tunnel lies between Kingsbridge and Loddiswell). This is set a little way into a steep rocky cutting. I have slightly modified the entrance to include a bridge that in real life does not exist. This is quite a high bridge some 40' above the track level and carries a small single track road that goes between Sorley farm and Churchstow (You won't find this road on any map biggrin.gif). To say that this road is little used would be an understatement but as an ancient right of way, and a condition of using the land of Sorley farm to build the line on, the bridge was provided without diversion.

...so Farmer Giles did put his conditions on the table

Good progress - assume the road bridge is removable for dismantling purposes?

Yep the bridge just lifts off to reveal the hinges.

Looking good - as one would expect :)

Question: Where did you get the insulation foam? It looks like 'extruded' polystyrene (or something similar) rather than the typical large bubble expanded poly; I've been looking all over for a reasonable supplier and was wondering if it came from a commonly available source?

Hi Steve

The foam came from Wickes link to product here. I felt that at £5 a sheet it would do just fine. I have stripped the foil of the foam, well I don't really need it for the insulation. I did find that if you pull the foil off just one side the board bends but take it off both sides and the board returns to a nice flat shape. You can get it in far larger sheets than I purchased - However I didn't need much and this size fitted nicely into the car.

Kris,Is Sorley tunnel still accessible ? There used to be an adventure farm attraction with it .Is it still open.

Thanks for the pointer - I've played with the Celotex board before when making a simple test track, but hadn't made the link to being able to shape it for the main scenery profile

I've been looking for the 'blue' or 'pink' foam with no success, so I'll have a play with some offcuts of this stuff to see how well it works

Thanks again and keep up the cracking good work :)

Thanks for the comment Rob. Sorley tunnel world of adventures closed down about 3 years ago. At the time a couple of my friends considered purchasing the site but could not work out how it could be make viable. I think that much of the site has now been turned in to housing (it's a horrible turn out on to the "main" road from them). I don't believe that the tunnel is now accessible unless you contact the landowner and get permission, I have heard that they tend to be reasonable approachable on this though.

You can also access it on the Kingsbridge side from Coombe fishery if you ask nicely. The foam Kris has used is a standard building trade foam, produced under a variety of trade names in both 50mm and 100mm thickness, The only disadvantage about using it is the dust is horrible, so wear a dust mask for cutting and sanding it. It also joins better with no nails type glue than ordinary PVA. Its big plus is you can sand it so for Devons' rolling hills itsbetter than expanded polystyrene. Also availavble free from building site skips, particularly new builds as off cuts.
