I'd like to publicly thank this man, Jim of Data 1 Systems, for all that he's done behind the scenes over the last week. Sure, it's taken longer than planned but it's been done professionally and with vast amounts of single mindedness.

It does seems as though the majority of our recent problems were caused by UK2 and their inadequacies at setting up configurations for this type of server usage. Jim's experience in forum management and scripting have been a godsend in translating all of this into something I, as a basic-skilled person in server terms, can understand. If the move hadn't been made the site would have eventually disappeared up its own digital backside into an unrecoverable mess. It's a good job I saw sense and stopped perservering with UK2.

Jim's communications have been excellent throughout despite the disadvantages of the time difference with him beavering away late into the evening there/darkest before the dawn hours here.

I should have listened to Martin Wynne last time round and saved a couple of month's of frustration but it looks like we're finally at home now on a server that should last us a couple or years or so.

Well done that man.

Hoorah! You're back! Well done to all involved - I was starting to think I'd have to give up RM Web for Lent!
Missed you all! You don't know how much you appreciate the good things until you haven't got them!
Richard.

:icon_thumbsup2:

... this must be the positive thread :icon_thumbsup2: ... much better than some of the froth I have read elsewhere :icon_yawn: ... I guess some people have missed the opportunity to voice their (negative/meaningless opinions).

The whole thing sounded like a nightmare but at the end of the day 'nobody died' and things will get there in the end :icon_e_smile:

Cheers to Jim and all others who were involved with the transfer! :) Had I been in Andy's place I am not sure how long I would have managed to put up with all these troubles over the past few weeks - and indeed whether I would not just have eventually binned everything.

Andy, if you should ever head over to the U.S. and meet Jim, do buy him a drink from all of us - I'd rather not say "from everyone of us" as I would not want to be blamed for causing harm to anybody's health, even indirectly!

Yes,
Well done to all involved.

Now, the important questions...

How much did it cost?
Is there a shortfall from the existing fund?
How much do you need?
How can we raise some more operating funds?

Time to dig in those pockets...

Well done chaps - looks like it's shaping up to be a great partnership (and I'm glad it took longer than anticipated as it gave me a chance to get started on editing the several hundred wedding & reception etc photos I had to take on Saturday).

I'd just like to throw my twopenyyworth in too - a big Posted Image to Andy and Jim. I was not around at "peak" time last night, but at 10pm the site was running along nicely in full function mode. I see that the image snapshots are back to small size so the list of "niggles" is being tackled effectively.

Bodes well for the future Posted Image

Does this mean no more downtime in the evenings etc? When am I going to get any modelling done!? Posted Image

On a more serious note, thank you to all involved for their hard work and perseverance. Sure, it looks like a few Gremlins got into the machinery during the trip, but I'm sure they'll drop out as things settle in.

Jim has carried out a lot of work this week identifying where loads were being placed on the server at peak times and the source of the load. He has worked to resolve the problem which centred around search engines absolutely hammering the board content. He's put controls in place to manage this and it's been pleasing to see the board perform during peak periods.

Now the root problem seems to have been cured it's time to work on the outstanding issues, I'll be discussing with Jim whether it's better to investigate and cure the outstanding problems or whether to carry out a separate install of the latest version of the software that will run cleanly and see how that performs with the database. Either way an upgrade to the latest version will be necessary at some point but it's the order in which this is carried out that needs to be assessed.

I accept it's still not perfect but I'm thrilled that we're in a much better position than a week ago.

My 2d worth - Work on the upgrade first. There is no point wasting time fixing the broken bits only to find the fixes do not work on the upgrade, or that the upgrade fixes them for you.

The site is running superbly now for which thanks are due to all involved. Only one bug remains and that is I can't seem to get email TRN's any more no matter what I do with my settings. Any thoughts? I'm relying on the "View New Content" button at the moment.

It is clear that Jim's hands are good ones. We should all rejoice that he appears to know what he is doing and write off the other bunch of circus performers to experience.
