Dunbracken

Just thought i'd post a link to my Dunbracken thread on the old layout, its' last exhibition outing is at ExpoNG at Swanley next weekend.

http://www.rmweb.co....php?f=9&t=12098

I'm hoping to have some of Ted Polet's stock from his Craigcorrie & Dunalastair Railway on it at some point during the day which will be a nice ending to the layout as it was Ted's modelling which inspired me to build it in the first place.

Last outing? Thought you'd only just finished it? What's the future - sale or break?

No problem, i'll post whatever pics I get. I'll be sure to take some of the C&DR train.

Yeah, last outing Chris. It was only ever a test layout for something bigger anyway, I've been itching to get on with the big one for a while now. I'll be making a start on that shortly after ExpoNG (once the loft is cleared out!). I've started a blog on the new layout (Port na Cailliche), link is in my signature.

I should hopefully be along to see it Tom... though I've got to combine the visit to ExpoNG with a spot of hunting for bits for a Halloween costume... I have a cunning plan that I'm determined to carry off!

Looking forward to seeing Dunbracken in the flesh though :)

Thats a surprise Tom, I guess I won't get to see it after-all. Will you be able to incorporate it into the bigger layout? As a branch terminus in front of the fiddle-yard for instance?

All the best,

Dave, there are few people interested in buying it from me. I would consider building it into a bigger layout but it's always only been a 'test' for something larger. The bigger layout is something i've had on my mind for some years now, and now that i've had a practice i'm itching to get on with it. That one will be around for years so i'm sure you'll get to see that one! ;)

Best,

Tom.

Well, a very sucessful and unexpected day at ExpoNG today.

I was both honoured and extremely surprised to be presented with this:

Unfortunately the camera on my phone doesn't do it justice, I'll have to get some good photos of it before I have to hand it back next year.

Thanks to all those who came along today and passed comment on the layout and dropped in to say hi.

I have received 6 invites to shows for Dunbracken now (two of which involve foreign trips!), so I have decided to keep hold of it for the time being until I have completed Port na Cailliche to an exhibitable standard.

Thanks very much, Reinier's work was always of interest to me when I was beginning in 009 modelling.

A lot of the coments on the layout after receiving the award were about the atmosphere more than anything else, I'm flattered to have my work associated with that of Reinier ;)

An excellent layout and a worthy prizewinner. I'd like to add my congratulations.

I am also glad to hear that the layout remains "on circuit" for the foreseeable future as I think it really does deserve more public exposure and acclaim. I was slightly taken aback by its small size despite having followed it on RMWeb. Though I would of preferred a more elevated viewing height that was all I could find fault with.

Though, of course, wishing you success with your new loft layout, I secretly hope that Dunbraken gets a chance to be seen by a wider audience than just the NG specialist types that attended ExpoNG.

Thanks for your kind words, Kenton.

I am tempted to raise the height of the layout now it has a prolonged exhibition career ahead of it, but that would defeat the point of having it on an ironing board so it will probably stay as is.

Some of the show invites I accepted were to generic shows rather than NG specific so it will be appearing before a wider audience.

I also had a lot of photos taken for an article that will be appearing in Voie Libre at some point :D

Tom, congratulations on the trophy win B) It's well deserved, you have a lovely layout there, and I'm glad it's made you decide to take it to a few more shows.

Thanks Martin, one of the invites was to the westcountry, will post more about that once it's confirmed.

The award was very well deserved Tom. I thought Dunbracken an excellent layout absolutely full of atmosphere and some very nice touches like the old stone chute. You just need Macphail, Dougie, Sunny Jim and Macfarlane but as you say they're probably all in the pub.

Aha, That is good news. Congratulations on the award Tom, well deserved I'm sure.

I think you are wise to hang on the layout for the time being, so you can keep exhibiting while building the new one. Who know, you might get attached to it!

All the best,

Dave.

PS Who won the David Lloyd Memorial Trophy?

Thanks Dave, I will concentrate on building stock now and, as I mentioned to a couple of people on Saturday, it will give me somewhere to play with new stock now that I'm keeping the layout.

Calstock (Cotehele) by Chris Peacock.

Well done Tom!

Cheers Steve, sorry we couldn't get to run the Landie, we'll have to have a hope operating session to get it running once it's painted ;)

Well I can confirm the suprise on Tom's face when he got called over to be presented with the trophy as it was the first chance I had had to have a chat as he was so busy. laugh.gif Thanks for the info.

I had just commented it was nice to see that he had avoided the temptation to cram it with track. I think a lot of the atmosphere is due to this as it really does give an impression of a remote location which is stunning in such a small space. Really does give me some ideas for how to build a smaller layout without losing the impression of the train in the landscape.

Now you are going to hold onto it Tom why not follow Ted Polets inspiration further and build the bigger layout so that Dunbracken could be linked in one day. wink.gif

Thanks for all the comments! :D

Ken, it was nice to meet you and put a face to the other person modelling a layout with a name coined from Hamish Macbeth. Look forward to seeing Lochdubh one day!

Paul, apologies for breaking off mid chat... was nice to meet you too. Hopefully we will get to finish that conversation one day! ;)
