Modbury - Baseboards (3) - Complete

Ian Smith

Last week I managed to complete the second traintable for Modbury (the Exeter end one). Over the last couple of days I have painted the baseboards so that I am now in a position to actually start laying the track (although that will have to wait for a few days as I want to get my third 4 wheel coach complete ready for the 2mm Association event at Kidderminster on the 21st.

Below are a few images of the progress to date - I have placed the templet plan on the baseboards and positioned some stock to give a better idea of scale (the train tables are each 20" diameter, and the scenic portion of the layout is 6'0" long.

V nice.

What's your floor to rail height?

Miss P,

Floor to rail height is 4'0" (or 1200mm in new money).  Backscenes are 1'6" high (the ones across the rear are only temporarily screwed on for the time being to allow me access from the back when constructing the track work).  I still need to construct the lighting pelmet / proscenium arch.

Paul & Andy,

Thank you for the positive comments.

This is going to be a little belter. It really shows the advantage of 2mm in that you have an interesting trackplan that retains a feeling of spaciousness in just six feet. I'm particularly pleased you have gone for a high backscene, I never like to see the top of the sky when looking in to a scene.

It is a lovely part of the country so it should make a vary attractive scene. Judging by the way you have done the basics I am sure you will do it justice.

Jerry,

Thankyou.  I too prefer tall back scenes (it's one of the reasons that I find Highbury in particular such an attractive layout).  I too don't like to see the top or over them when viewing the models on the layout proper.  Eventually, the proscenium arch will be about 6" deep providing a "12" viewing slot" into the layout.  The only downside will be that I will always have to operate from the front (or get myself a retro pair of '70's platform shoes - errm, perhaps not, maybe a box to stand on might be better) ;-)  Although I don't see that as a real downside as both Highbury and Tucking Mill have shown.

Don,

Thankyou.  The South Hams area of Devon has always been a favourite of mine, and I did consider modelling Gara Bridge on the Kingsbridge line, but I know that someone did that years ago in 2FS.  Additionally, I have a particular liking for the Broad Gauge, and especially Baulk Road track work (which obviously the Kingsbridge line wasn't laid to), so a little modellers licence and imagination allows a potential "might have been".

Dave,

I'm really looking forward to making a start on the track work, but I really wanted to make sure that all of the construction work of the layout was completed first.  It has been a real effort to stop myself from rushing in, but hopefully that patience will pay off in the long term!

Hi Ian, I'm coming a little late to this. It looks fantastic. Really sets all your wonderful stock into context.

The goods shed already does a lot for the ex-BG feel of things. Amazing how Brunel's style permeates everything about that age.

Thank you Mikkel, hopefully I will be able to get some track down soon - that really should ooze Brunel!  :-)
