keeping the platform at bay...

Good Evening,

Last night I managed to complete the new platform which replaced the first one ripped out...not sure I will ever get to make a layout where something doesn't get ripped out :D

The previous one was in card and was probably going to fall my usual 2mm approach of card carcass followed by a sheet of fine wet and dry on top to represent the apshalt, however I was looking to try something as an alternative to that.

My first thoughts were to use Scalescenes sheets which would be soaked onto a plasticard carcass using Liquid Poly etc. Thanks to Tony Simms for dropping me a PM on his experiences with this :good:

For my sons 4mm roundy roundy, I used the Scalescenes platform kits which came together fairly quickly and looked the part and I was keen to try this for PWBIAB. That said, my only reservation had been the use of PVA and Spraymount adhesive which had resulted in some delamination occuring.

Enter the conversation, Ian (Scanman) who then suggested instead of using Liquid Poly etc, that I print the Scalescenes sheets on A4 self adhesive sticky labels...and he even sent me through a few trial sheets to test it on :good:

This was done and a visit to Rymans followed last week where I was able to buy a smallish pack for £6.99 or so. I should just add that Ian's excellent range of roof tiles are using the same principle and a few peeps might recall that's how I had tiled the roof of Kyle station.

The new platform carcass was built this weekend in BCN and they were packaged and brought to LDN along with the Scalescenes sheets that I had pre-printed on the SA labels.

Last night I spent an enjoyable couple of hours cutting and applying the sheets. I must say, that this method is quite straightforward (and without noxious fumes) and the sheets are quite workable allowing a little repositioning in places.

Looking at the pics I have of the station, the bay platform seemed to use wider paving slabs along the edges whilst the through line had much narrower so I spliced them to represent this and give a little interest to the asphalt surface.

Here's a few pics starting with the new plasticard shell...

Overall, I am quite pleased how quick and straightforward the process was and I will fly them back this weekend, position them and then the ballasting can commence :)

Nice work Pete ;)

One question though. Where have all the Liquorice Allsorts gone? :D

Cheers,

Thanks Mark...

Where have all the Liquorice Allsorts gone?

Am ashamed to say I binned the box half full :O After I had 'chain eaten' the twentieth, I thought it was safer as I would have demolished the whole box tonight...then that Paddock Wood T-shirt would never fit...

Looking good, Pete. I think we're all doomed to forever rip out and replace bits of trainset. It wouldn't be so much fun otherwise, would it? :D

Looks great Pete! Sometimes it's best to rip out and start again. I know I have started a few things again as if I didn't, they would bug me forever!

Best regards,

Jeremy

Thanks Tony - That's why the swear box is an invaluable modelling aid...;)

Thanks Jeremy - I'm guessing the Peco Streamline isn't one of them...yet :)

Hi Pete, that's an interesting use of the sticky labels technique. And I like any approach that minimizes the (ob)noxious bits as much as possible. That Ian fellow is a clever man. Great looking bay platform.

Will it be going back to BCN through the security checks? "Sorry Sir, no bay platforms allowed in the carry-on luggage. Can't have you threatening the captain with that!"

Great looking bay platform

Thanks Mikkel - Coming from the master of The Bay, I take that as a huge compliment :)

As for my hand luggage, it shall indeed be flown this Friday back to BCN...I should think if my name was John McLane, it might pose me a few more problems...Yippee ki yay... :D

Hi Pete -

Thanks for the plug, your usual commission right?? G>

As to 'ripping things out' - if you ever finish a layout without ripping something out, can you let us all know the secret??

The model is starting to look really good BTW (which was the whole point of this post!)

If you want to give flying to BCN a miss on the w/e of 22 June, why not come over to the 2mm Expo at Wallingford?  Rich Brummitt & I are going & Farnborough (Hants) is only 40 mins from Waterloo - I could pick you up there?

Thanks Ian

Thanks also for the offer of the 22 June....Would love to, but have already block booked all my flights up until August...and besides...if I told my wife I was skipping a weekend to go see an exhibition, then my Coombe Junction layout would probably be stuck in a skip... :O

Just ring her Friday morning, tell her you've got an irritating ear infection that stops you flying...  Ahh, more important the problem with the tickets - can't lose money...

I like the sticky label idea. I had a similar problem a while back (the Royale Hotel lettering) and wound up using Pritt (a brand new stick though - it seems to deteriorate fairly quickly). This worked at the time but a ripple has since appeared - very annoying and since the lettering is inkjet printed, options for repairing need to avoid the use of water.

Nice try Ian...but it's not helped by my brother-in-law having his 50th Birthday that weekend....committed I am...

I like the sticky label idea

All credit to Ian for that one Andy...

Hi Pete, that looks really good. I think I might have missed it, but what did you use for the platform structure - card or plasticard? In addition, did you use inkjet, laser or what other form of printing... and is it waterproof?

Given that my inkjet, that I used to print my art prints on is "bust"... but we've a colour laser downstairs that's hooked up to the desktop (for boys homework etc - minecraft isn't homework!!!!), so maybe I could give that a try!

As I said... is the print waterproof or will all the drooling on 13/5 likely affect the finish ;-)

Thanks Jon

oooh I dunno :O Better check the printers and report back tomorrow.

There will be no drooling the 11/5 (Check date ;)) but perhaps some splashes from a Gin Tonic :jester:
