The Vegetable Garden

I mentioned in my last blog entry that I thought a vegetable garden might add some interest to the foreground of the layout. I started by forming the soil texture using textured ceiling paint which was then painted an earth brown/grey colour using acrylics.

The plants were made from postiche hair covered in Greenscene ground foam and "leaves" from Polak. a framework was made for the runner beans using 0.6mm diameter plastic rod, painted to look like canes.

I decided that a compost heap would help add some interest to the scene, so I built one using Slaters Plastikard corrugated sheeting and some balsa wood posts. This was painted using enamels and glued in position using PVA adhesive. Postiche hair, static grass fibres and ground foam were used to simulate rotting vegetation inside the compost heap.

Static grass fibres were then applied using my Grassmaster around the allotment and the "station name written in rocks" that featured in the previous blog entry.

Weeds and brambles were then added on top of the static grass fibres to add texture and break up the uniform appearance of the grass. These were once again made from teased out rubberised horse hair, postiche and ground foams from Greenscene and Polak.

The scenery in the layouts foreground is nearing completion, apart from the wooded area that I've planned for the right hand end of the layout. I need to construct a number of trees that will be used to help mask the exit of the private siding from the scene. Here's an overall view of the layout to show the "state of play" so far.

I've accepted an invitation to bring the layout along to the members day in Taunton at the end of April next year, so I need to get busy and finish the layout over the next four months. At the moment the layout is lit by the lights in my workshop, so I need to construct a lighting gantry for the layout before it's ready for its first showing:-) I've also treated myself to a dcc controller and plan on equipping my locos with sound chips, so I've got a busy winter ahead of me!

I'll finish this post with a black and white picture of the vegetable patch.

The use of postiche and Green Scene scatters give a very nice depth to the scenics Dave.

Lovely Dave and I look forward to seeing it at Taunton.  But what on earth is the pipe (?) that bloke has in his mouth - looks distinctly Germanic

Thanks Robin, Im a big fan of the Greenscene scatters, they've got a lovely range of fairly muted colours that blend really well together.

Hi Mike, yes looking forward to seeing you at Taunton, I just hope the layout behaves itself:-). The pipe is an affectation brought on by having a Bavarian Grandfather. Although he is known locally as Bill Smith, his real name is actually Wilhelm Schmitt :-)

That`s some high standard modelling. Great overall layout view.
Thanks Black5!

Exquisite, Dave. The wheelbarrow, complete with weeds and all, is my favourite part.

Absolutely fantastic as usual Dave. Gives me things to think about for my layout.

Thanks Pete!

Thanks Mikkel!  I must admit I thoroughly enjoyed making the wheelbarrow kit and adding the weeds:-)

Reminds me of a Don Breckon painting, spot on!

Thanks Ratty, delighted you think so!

Absolutely superb! Those two last photos ooze the atmosphere of a peaceful country terminus. You can just hear the birds tweeting (not on twitter!) in the background.

I've been enjoying seeing the progress and making notes on your modelling tips. Keep the updates coming!

Best regards,

Jeremy

Splendid stuff as usual. I do like the 'period' B/W image, too.

Thanks Mike:-) I must admit I'm quite fond of black and white shots. I guess the fact that period prototype photos were monochrome makes the model pictures look more convincing.
