Bristol Barrow Road - Storage Sidings Track

Both C12 crossovers are now built, one for each end. Starting at the Lawrence Hill Junction end of the layout I have now extended the hand built track onto the first storage yard board to join up with the C12 crossover at that end. The first B7L turnout from the Up Main to the storage sidings is also built and is test positioned in the following photos. I have built the end curves using ply and rivet construction to make sure the gauge widening is correct. All the straight track in the storage sidings will be C&L flexitrack.

Hi Rob,

Nice smooth curves, which I'm sure will help to give excellent running. Having just read Steve Hall's thought provoking article in Snooze 202, I wonder whether introducing cant on the curves would make things even better? Any thoughts?

Hi Geraint, I've just read the article as well. I'm going to see how it performs first. I can retro fit additional card under the track if necessary. I've used the Graham Turner method of track laying on strips of 0.3mm thick black card which can be 'un-glued' using a spatula. I'd prefer it works without the cant but........... Robin

Hi Robin.

Yes, very nice smooth curves. The C12 cross over looks good, although it would be great to see it in more close up detail. Have you tested any stock across it yet?

Dave.

Hi Dave,

I've uploaded a few close up shots of the C12. The TOUs are not fixed yet but I have test run the coach over the track without any problems so far.

Hi Rob

Some excellent work there. I expect you're looking forward to glueing the chairs on! There is something about really big turnouts on a layout; I think it has something to do with them being relatively rare. A 2FS colleague of mine has some rather wonderful FB F20s on his developing Swinton layout. You can see them here:

Page down to the April entry. Not on a curve like yours but impressive nonetheless.

I doubt Robin is planning to glue chairs on these points as they're in the fiddle yard/storage sidings. Could be wrong of course....

Hi,

Looks superb - Apologies if I've missed this from an earlier blog, but how have you constructed your baseboards, and what at they covered with?

Regards

Rich

The baseboards are made from good quality birch ply 6.5mm thick. The sides and ends are formed of two layers glued together with Titebond glue, the inner being 6.5mm shorter than the outer ie 110mm and 103.5mm. The top surface of 6.5mm is fitted into the inner recess and the whole unit glued together in a jig. Depending on the board size there are one or two ribs across the underside of each board.

The storage yard boards are covered with 2mm thick laminate floor underlay which has a self adhesive surface on one side. This is available in 10m x 1m rolls from B&Q or online via ebay.

The scenic boards are surfaced with 5mm thick black foam sheet obtained from C&L Finescale.

Hope this helps. Full details are on previous posts.

Hello Robin

Many thanks - I struggle to get to grips with the blog posts, and usually only look at the Forum details on here as a result, but this somehow showed up on the main page! Thanks for the background, thats interesting, I'll go and try and find the full details!

Cheers

Rich
