Peckett E Class

Evening all

With the T9 virtually complete, at least for now until I can buy some number plates, I've turned my attention to the next project. This is a Peckett 0-4-0ST E class, a couple of which were acquired by the GWR via the Swansea Harbour Trust. MIne's going to be an industrial version for use as the works shunter on Wheal Elizabeth (at least for now anyhow). Haven't decided on a name yet. Might be Munchkin, might be Minion.

The kit itself is from CSP Marketing and is going together quite nicely. My 1368 chassis is from the same stable and they're well thought out, with clear instructions and exploded diagrams which makes things simple. Chassis will be compensated and I'm using High Level hornguides and horn blocks. A High Level gearbox and 1015 Mashy motor will complete. Gear box is built but the motor will be purchased at Expo EM in a couple of weeks' time.

As you can see I'm putting the body together in sections. These have yet to be joined together but the trial fit looks ok. Some tweaks will no doubt be required later.

Pics attached. Updates to follow as and when.

Of course, if you're going to call it Minion, then you'll have to paint it yellow :D

Aye, with a blue footplate too!

Quick question Andrew: how's the motor mounted in this? Is it vertical in the firebox?

It's not apparent from the photo but no. I'm going to cut away most of the rear support for the lower boiler (I may need to reinforce the support inside with something to stop it pulling out of shape) and that will allow the motor to sit horizontally, coming up through the firebox via a D2 drivestretcher.

Gotcha, thanks. I did wonder - I have a High Level RSH which has just such an arrangement and have incorporated something similar into my Bagnall 0-6-0ST, which you've seen of course. Presumably the saddle tank will lift off?

It does at the moment. I had contemplated fixing the lower part of the boiler to the chassis but I like the idea of just screwing the tank down. Hmm...

How'd you do the Bagnall?

Sorry for the delay Andrew, I'd only just remembered that I commented on this. there are some images on my long-forgotten blog: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/blog/78/entry-8270-an-impetus-bagnall/

Bascially, the answer is that I made the boiler and saddletank as one sub-assembly into which the motor and flywheel slides. The boiler is fixed by means of a bolt in the smokebox and is located at the cab end via the hole etched in the front sheet.

Simple enough, once you've worked out how to do it...

This looks really nice. I am wanting to get into building locos would you recommend this as a good entry level kit - I have built chassis, rolling stock and tenders previously.

It's not a bad kit. I was building a test etch so there were a few niggles that hopefully have been corrected. If you've built stuff before you should be fine. The tricky part is forming the saddle tank.

Judith Edge kits have a good reputation too and they're not too expensive, if you're after alternatives.
