O2

No, not the mobile sort, but the ex LSWR 0-4-4 type. I just wanted to make sure Kernow do one and as we all know, building a kit is the best way of ensuring a r-t-r offering appears.

Mine is the Gibson variety, acquired years ago for a Christmas present. It doesn't really fit any particular theme, other than a some point in the future passenger alteration for Wheal Elizabeth. It could appear on a non clay goods I suppose.

I decided that I needed to free up space in the modelling cupboard and the 02 was one of my earlier purchases. Other things are going to be offloaded at the bring and buy at Scaleforum or ebay. I've a Maunsell P set which should suit the 02 very nicely.

Edited 23:26 Hmm. Thought as much!

Anyway. Pics attached. I am going to spring this one and am using High Level hornblocks with the springing anchor.

i will mention this once they are planning to do one in the next year, Im a volenteer down on the IWSR, Kernow and the IWSR are arranging a date in the off season to have W24 Calbourne scanned.

As of yet we are unsure if they are doing mainland or island O2 of course difference being the bunker and other areas location of air tanks ect...

Ive known about this for a few months, but its only just started up making arrangements, as of yet Kernow are yet to get back to the railway with a date.

Interesting Andrew. I built one of these a few years ago (if offered the opportunity to build another, I would decline and do the SE Finecast one instead). It does show how etched kit design has progressed in the last 25 years. Which one are you planning to do? 225, 200 and 199 were the late survivors and all have detail differences. A few things to be aware of:

The cab interior shown in the instructions (I found them more or less useless) appears to be from a J15 (with the screw reverser tippexed out on the original). The backhead casting is clearly for something else and needs a good 3mm taken off the bottom. Getting one from SE Finecast would be a much better bet (similarly the chimney - neither the Gibson or the SEF is 100%, but the SEF is better). The reverser and brake standard are very obvious on the O2 and aren't included.

The smokebox as designed has no clearance for the front wheels - I resorted to a dental burr to mill enough clearance inside the splashers which isn't pretty. The casting for the front is wrong - the smokebox door is too small (I built it up to match the rim around the edge in Milliput). The SEF version is infinitely better and in one piece with rivets more or less where they should be. This might be a good option actually...

The tank fillers are incorrect as are the clack valves (both seem to be GER parts). Proper SR type clacks can be had from Branchlines, you're on your own with the fillers, but they aren't too difficult.

There are all manner of details not included - lifting brackets on the tanks, injectors, and the brake assembly is vastly oversimplified.

The cab/tanks are the very devil to build square - insufficient location, etc. Between dad and I it took three goes. The best bet is to bolt the footplate to a suitably shaped piece of wood. This all sounds somewhat negative, but since I've been there...

Hi Adam

thanks for the advice. I'm planning to do 30200. As you say, kit design has moved on somewhat. I've already discovered some 'joys' in the instructions. Equalising link on the bogie outside the frames? I think not. As Vinnie Jones once said 'it's been emotional'. I think this is going to be a labour of love.

I built mine with full beam compensation - the result runs well and has rather more spacers than the original design which, if I remember rightly, employed 0.45 mm intended to hang the brake shoes as a significant structural capacity...
