West Country Conversion to P4 part 6 - all stop

OK, I have reached the point where I wished I'd gone down the etched chassis route. So I'm going to stop and have a think about whether I should.

Have spent the evening b*ggering about with the drawbar. All ok after several attempts to solder 2 wires the correct way round. Body put back on. Binds have reappeared on the cylinders again, where previously there were none. Hmm. I have a sneaking suspicion that something's moving around which shouldn't be. I've also decided that there are quite a few things I'm going to have to do to the Hornby body. Smoke deflectors for one. Filling the holes left by the removal of the crest another. Respray, relining, renumbering and a shed load of pipework are going to be required, which is ok but I suspect the chassis is going to be the weak link. I have an awful feeling that I could spend a lot of time fettling the chassis for it to a) not work or B) cause an awful lot of grief.

Options:

1. Wait until Scaleforum and buy an escapement file. Have one last go at the cylinders.

2. Acquire etched chassis, spring all axles and do it properly.

Will keep you posted.

I take it that you read this P4 effort a while ago?

If all else fails, Comet do a pretty competent Light Pacific chassis pack. I do wish they'd consider doing one for the Merchant Navy as well......

I will confess that after doing the conversion that etched chassis look a lot easier.

This is one of the reasons I am doing etched chasis and a Airfix/Dapol body for my BR 76XXX standards rather than convert a R-T-R. It also isn't just the chasis, but the work on the topside as well to bring it up to spec.

I am planning to do Lapford, but only using the Hornby Body and tender. Chassis will be from the EMGS stores, Gibson or even scratch built. (by the way can anyone recomemend the correct tender to use for 1960 with Raves still in place).

However the conversion does work. Not sure why you are getting binding on the cylinders though. the only problem we detected was the short throw of the Gibson wheels and you have covered that.

Keep plugging away.

Not Comet?

I think you're looking at a PDK kit (expensive), or trying for a spare Hornby one on eBay.

Thanks Ivan

I had read the CLAG article, which lulled me into a false sense of security!

If only High Level could be persuaded to do a chassis kit!

I hadn't considered Comet.

I would consider a Hornby. But not being a West Country expert I wouldn't know which one to go for.

However I do have an Airfix kit...

Hmm perhaps I should do a blog or forum article in the Southern section before I hijack this blog entry.

Ullypug, this conversion should work, so keep looking and thinking about it. It has to be something simple and therefore fixable.

You've gone so far with all the details, surely a proper etched chassis is screaming out to be done to compliment existing work. No brainer for me.

I would always go for a new chassis if there is a decent kit one about, If what you are doing fails now what is going to happen in service?

"Father Ted" Scannell's good at doing that.

Hello there,

I'm working with Ultrascale to produce a conversion pack for the Hornby West Country pacific. Do you fancy assisting to help make it as good as possible?

Cheers

Hi Dave. I'm certainly happy to help but I'm not really an expert. I think there are a few others with more knowledge than me.

Hi Andrew,

Feel free to suggest a few to join in, David at Ultrascale is already an expert but it would help if a few of us could work together to help ensure that the Ultrascale conversion pack is the dogs doo dahs.

Cheers

I hate to resurrect something that might be thoroughly dead, but were you able to fix the issues and finish the conversion? I'm considering one myself.

Hi Quentin

It's not thoroughly dead, just sleeping!

In the end I bought a Comet chassis kit for this but haven't got round to building it yet. It's on the to do list!

Others seem to have been able to convert the West Country so maybe it was me...

Good luck!
