Evening all

Just a bit of a progress report on Cheddar.

All 8 boards are now built and I'm getting ready to start building the track.

The last two boards are a little different as they will have the embankment and overbridge on Station Road on the Wells end of the station.

I've just about finalised the final layout plan and have started to mark up the various features. Next step will be printing the entire plan at full size and laying out on the boards.

Each board is a 6mm frame around which there will be another layer of 4mm. This will be contoured to suit and is why I've not cut and fitted to date.

I've acquired the last of the ply: 12mm for the trackbed and the 4mm as above.

The trackbed is going to extend beyond the track to the width of the 'cess' only. I've bought the first lot of various C&L chairs and HiNi rail which will combine with ply sleepers.

Track is going to sit on 3mm laminate flooring underlay which is a closed cell foam.

The rest of the baseboards are going to be covered in 15mm craft foam which I've ordered from Panel Systems (600mm x 600mm x 15mm thick). You get 20 sheets in a pack for £53 and you can get a range of thicknesses. It should fit between the 12mm+3mm track bed and give a nice level surface for scenics. As each board is going to measure 820mm long and 1000mm deep, solid ply topped boards would have weighed a ton.

Baseboard supports is a run of 75mm x 38mm aluminium box beams supported on adjustable builders trestles. These should outlast everything else and be used for other layouts as and when:-)

I can get half the layout up (4 boards) in a continuous run and there will be room to put the entire layout up albeit in two halves. It's not ideal but with suitable jumper cables I should be able to test.

Sheet 12mm and 4mm ply is temporarily laid on the top to keep it flat at the moment but isn't fixed down.

I've a separate area where I can work on a par of adjacent boards at a time

Blimey Andrew, you're a fast worker!

Can I ask about the garage door insulation, does it make a difference?

Thanks gents!

Tim. Yes it does make a difference. It's the 50mm thick sheet foil backed both sides, stuck onto the door with Gripfill. I've got brush type draught excluders down the sides and P seals top and bottom. It's not perfect but it's the best I could manage. You can see one of the tubular trace heaters I've got too. There are 6 of these and I switch them on one by one as the outside temperature drops. They're rated at 60w and just keep the damp chill at bay.

Thanks Andrew. I must investigate some for my door.

I have a dehumidifier running in my garage, takes the dampness out and raises the temperature by a degree or so.
