I have finished my Church Street diorama. Another street in my fictive town of Northall.
I started to create a base. The base is build up with 3cm high card strips on a MDF base.
First, I finished the Assurance Agency. I used textures from several Scalescenes kits.
To finish my diorama, I had to add some pavement in front of the Assurance office. T...

I start with a quote of Pablo Picasso: “I always do things that I cannot do to learn how I have to do it”
I have finished the front of my Georgian building. I used Marshalswick House from Petite Properties as a base.
I used again textures from Scalescenes printed on a textures Hahnemühle photo paper. (Un)fortunately something went wro...

Church Street part 3

Posted by Job's Modelling , in Church Street 28 August 2017 - * * * * * · 458 views

The starting point    Now I have finished the pub.  I added the roof using the slate roof textures from Scalescenes. They are printed on 100 gsm Rice Paper from Hahnemühle. This paper has a fine nice texture. Chimneys are from the kit of Petite Properties. They have the brick paper I used for the pub. Roof flashing is from Scalescenes....

Church Street part 2

Posted by Job's Modelling , in Church Street 10 August 2017 - * * * * * · 400 views

I had more time to model this week. So here is an update.
The starting point.      The kit from Petite Properties is easy to build when you follow the instructions. Especially when you want to create a shop. The shopfront gives great opportunities.   For my pub, I had to make some additional changes. I searched for some usable...

Church Street part 1

Posted by Job's Modelling , in Church Street 04 August 2017 - * * * * * · 412 views

I have started a new project.
My cataract surgery was successful. I could start modelling again.  I got some low relief 1:76th buildings from Petite Properties for my birthday.  So, for my new project I will use them to create a scene for Church Street. One of the kits “No. 2 Station Road” will be used to create a pub.  The kits o...

Update
My first eye “operation” for cataract in front of my both eyes was a success. I can now see with one eye. The other eye will be operated in the mid of June. Now I’m looking forward to it.
Decided to wait with modelling until I can see again with both eyes.  Interior
In the past, I made an interior for a terraced house in Caroline Stre...

Shop design 5 – the brick front

Posted by Job's Modelling , in High Street 31 March 2017 - - - - - - · 702 views

The starting point    The finished interior.  Front brick bond.  Next step is to create the front for the shop and the adjacent buildings.
I wanted to build a as good as possible time based row of buildings. The brick bond provided by the kit was English Bond. Accorcing to the most useful book “The Victorian house explained” fr...

Shop design 4 – indirect lighting

Posted by Job's Modelling , in High Street 18 March 2017 - * * * * * · 659 views

The starting point    A shop overview.  Third shop wall  I had now created two shop walls. For the third one I had to create a new back ground. First I made a texture with a colour that fits with the background colour of the other walls. Than I did some research on the internet and found a nice picture with 1950’s washing soap...

Shop design 3 – shop counter

Posted by Job's Modelling , in High Street 03 March 2017 - * * * * * · 682 views

Decline of the counter shop
In the late 1950’s started the decline of the independent retail sector. Independent grocers started to respond on this decline in to different ways:
the retailer agreed to accept a minimum quantity from the supplier and that at a specified minimum charge. The wholesaler accepts a slightly reduced ,argin generally varying...

SHOP DESIGN 2

Posted by Job's Modelling , in High Street 20 February 2017 - * * * * * · 349 views

SHOP INTERIORS Apart from the general external shop design shops have a different function. There is a large difference for instance between a fish and ships and a grocery. I have made an interior for a fish and ships in OO scale using Scalescenes templates.   Now I’m building a grocery shop in O scale using Smart Models templates. Until no...

Shops
I like those old English shops. And a lot of nice pictures can be found on the internet. There is also a lot of information to find to create a believable shop front. Untill now I have created several shops for my Northall diorama’s. all with a different character.

This was my second shop. Built for my Bridge Street project. Just using...

Information
A couple of months ago, I was searching the internet for information about painting a car. My OO-scale diecast models of course don’t need to paint completely. On the website of AK-interactive, I found some interesting information. I can advise everyone to download their catalogue: http://ak-interactiv...ds-2/catalogue/ . It...

I still wait for the right modelling solution for my eye problems. But this also give me the opportunity to do some research to create my fictive Northall. I hope you also will enjoy reading about my journey in creating Northall.  Creating a believable town.
Working on my diorama’s I have always trouble to keep things together to a...

Thinking… again    I have some serious eye problems due my allergic constitution. I see much less in bright light. The problem I have can be solved with medication or surgery or hospitalization. But after I have had some examinations and I know there is a way to help me see better. There are some good devices available for the problems I expe...

Queen Street part 5 - The story.

Posted by Job's Modelling , 19 November 2016 - * * * * * · 284 views

The story  My regular readers know that I like to create a background story for my diorama’s. I mostly do this before I start building and sometimes when I suggestion comes along in the comments of my blog entries, for instance adding a poster on the brick wall.  G.W. Barlow & Son Ltd / Pawnbrokers & Jewellers
No. 14 Queens Street...

The shop is made with different textures from differe...

Queen Street part 3 – laundry shop

Posted by Job's Modelling , in Queen Street 09 October 2016 - * * * * * · 881 views

The middle building
The shop in the middle of the building is still in use. I know how to create windows for a derelict building. So for my first building I had no problem. But how to crate believable windows above the shop for my second building?  A late 1950’s Laundry shop
I always try to create a believable late 1950’s scene. First I make a...

Queen Street part 2

Posted by Job's Modelling , in Queen Street 27 August 2016 - * * * * * · 369 views

For this project I used a reference picture with a row of derelict shops. I never follow the picture to build a copy. The picture is the base to create the scene. Every part of the building will get another appearance. In this way even a small scene can look interesting.
For this building I searched carefully the colours to follow my colour scheme...

Queen Street part 1

Posted by Job's Modelling , in Queen Street 12 August 2016 - * * * * * · 415 views

I have started my new vignette. A vignette is smaller than a diorama, with the focus on the main subject. I my case this will be a mechanical horse for my story telling and a Morris Oxford III for the finished vignette.    I’m going to try out some a new weathering approach for my diecast models. But more about that in a later blog entry....
