The Big Build - The Typhoon Tale - Part 1

As a Christmas Present to myself last year (also a reward for not actually dying – that’s a story for another time), I treated myself to the Airfix 1/24 Scale Hawker Typhoon Mk 1B.

The kit is the stuff of legends, rumours abound that it takes a year to build - when I saw the instruction book (not a booklet), I saw why…

Finally at the beginning of June – with Loco commissions out of the way, I decided it was time to start it..

Up first was the Cockpit (pages 8 to 11 – of the instruction book)

Next Was the Napier-Sabre 24 Cylinder Engine and possibly the most time consuming part (pages 12 to 16)

Then it was the wings (pages 17 to 23 – this sounds quite a bit, but they go together quite rapidly)

Up next and where I am currently is the fuselage and a whole world of hurt (page 23 onwards – currently on page 27)

That's all for now..

Thanks..

This kit is definitely not for the novice or mid-ranged modeler - it's a beast and that's coming fro someone who used to actually build war planes for a living.

Very nice James and it's brought back memories of a spotty teenager [me] building the then new release 1/24 Hawker Harrier. This was way before the Falklands war that made it's name. I wouldn't mind another go. Gorgeous kits from Airfix. You need to do the mossie too.

I built (and still have) the 1/24 Scale Harrier (GR3 version), it's a lovely kit - built while I was working a Dunsfold. I also remember seeing a GR3 fuselage from the Falklands War - I can't remember the number, just the story..

She encounter heavy flak from the Argies, a 12 inch hole passing behind the engine (went through Frame 39 - load bearing) and made it back to ship - Hermes I think.

I had an Airfix 1/24 Scale Spitfire VB arrive today (eBay bargain)  - much simpler than the Typhoon, I'm going to do the clipped wing version.
