AC Electrics

At one time Leeds MRS set off to build a model of Hartford Junction on the WCML (for various reasons it was never finished) . As part of this I started to gather together some AC Electrics - all painted Electric Blue.

First up a Hornby bodyshelled AL1 (or 81)

New pantograph, modified bogies and added numbers/crests

and a Hornby AL6 (class 86)

repainted , new pantograph, modified bogies and Jackson Evans crests and numerals.

I also have a AL5 (Bachmann) but no layout to run it on.

Somewhere I've still got an unpainted Liliput AL1 body (Dapol flogged them off years ago) and all the bits to make it go. Not sure that I shall ever get round to it though..

What happened to the PW hut I built for Hartford? Gone with the wind I guess.

I feel there's a market out there for decent AC electrics.

Bachmann's 85 is totally superb, but we have no readily available catenary to run it under.  Dapol's masts are lovely, but no wires available yet.

Such a shame Heljan made a b***s up of their 86.  Could have been a great seller - think of all the liveries the class has carried over the years.  Class 90's would be the same.

Come on manufacturers - give us new Class 86, 87 and 90.  You know it makes sense!  After all there are not many more D&E classes to do!!

No its on Middleton Woods with Mr Ross - it was just right for one of the huts beside the tram lines..

Not sure that the AC Electrics are too popular. I have a Bachmann 85 in Electric Blue but I will probably never manage to build a layout with Overhead fitted

Hi Barry

It is a chicken and egg situation, no OLE so why buy, steal or make AC locos and units. Who will make decent OLE for the locos and MUs to run under when there are not that many locos and MU models?

I do like your AL1 and AL6.

Hi Clive

yes you are right - chicken and egg. These were obtained for a club layout of Hartford Junction - which was never finished and we had not sorted out the knitting(!).  While people scream for thm I wonder how many of say a 312 or a 313 would actually sell?
