The TK&F - Braking

Posted by Corbs , in TK&F No.5, TK&F No.6, Sudrian History 26 June 2018 - - - - - - · 429 views

In the early days, train brakes were not of much concern to the Knapford and Elsbridge Tramway, all the trains being unfitted goods, slowed either by the brakes on the loco or by pinning down the wagon brakes.
It was not until 1904 that the company had to confront this issue, with the expiration of the contract for the W&S to supply passenger services...

Maps!

Posted by Corbs , in Sudrian History 11 February 2018 - * * * * * · 501 views

This is something of a work in progress, but since it's likely to be a work in progress for a long time, I'm going to post about it now and update later. I've long wanted to map out 'my' NWR, and various places along the route, to work out what kind of traffic sources and destinations I have, and plan my timetables and traffic requirements appropriat...

Sudrian Story Scenes - 2

Posted by Corbs , in Story Scenes, 705 Westlin 21 December 2017 - * * * * * · 606 views

A couple of little vignettes from around the layout, sometimes referencing the books. Thomas and Henry swapping stories at the junction.

My friend Rich gave me an early christmas present. All of the switches on the layout were previously marked by coloured stickers, which isn't very prototypical, so we decided to position appropriately-colour...

I've been mucking about practicing focus stacking in photoshop and using the DSLR. What better excuse to channel my inner child and make little homages to scenes from The Railway Series ? "I see Daisy's left the milk again..."
"I'll have to make a special journey with it I suppose. Anyone would think I've nothing to do."

The Flying Kipper

Posted by Corbs , in 503 Col. Henry Regaby, Story Scenes 11 December 2017 - * * * * * · 1,066 views

All kinds of ships use the harbour at the big station by the sea. There are passenger ships, cargo ships and fishing boats also come here. They unload their fish on the quay. Some of it goes to shops in the town, and the rest in a special train to other places far away. This is the train the railwaymen called 'The Flying Kipper'.    Yes yes, I k...

Timetables and Traffic Requirements

Posted by Corbs , in Sudrian History 28 November 2017 - * * * * * · 426 views

A large theme of this alternate fictional universe is to give things reasons to exist. I've changed a lot from the Reverend's version, as I wanted to backdate the opening of the main Sudrian railways and give the island a chance to industrialise rapidly at the beginning of the 20th Century. A big part of any railway is the traffic demands, these will...

Sudrian Language

Posted by Corbs , in Sudrian History 02 October 2017 - * * * * * · 656 views

It was once said of Tolkein that he ended up writing the Lord of the Rings as a by-product of creating the Elvish language.
Whilst not quite as expansive as Middle-Earth (or even Westeros), I think Wilbert and George Awdry had a lot of fun creating the world of Sodor.
The elusive book 'THE ISLAND OF SODOR; Its people, history and railways' is all about bu...

Cylinders and Card Wagons - TK&F No.6

Posted by Corbs , in TK&F C&W, TK&F No.6 12 March 2017 - - - - - - · 427 views

I've never really done any card modelling, so thought I'd have a stab at some. A good use for an empty chocolate box!   One of the chief goods transported by the TK&F was lead ore. What I wanted to make was a wooden bodied hopper, a bit like the Snailbeach lead wagons, but in standard gauge and scaled up. A few reference pics online were ver...

House Colours - TK&F No.6 I love having proper liveries on my freelance railway, and by proper I mean having a set style that works across all the locos and stock. It's always great parking up two engines side by side and having them obviously belong to the same company, albeit fictional! Both No.301 and No.5 are in the initial paint stages while detailing still needs to be c...

TK&F No.6 Pt.III - A sprig of Leek Right, please don't judge me too harshly. I've never built a whitemetal kit before and can probably count my number of successful soldering attempts on my hands.
With that in mind, here's how I got on with the L&MLR body kit from Mosskito (formerly Meridian). After many test assemblies, I thought I had better get stuck in. Here's the sides a...

Made a bit of progress on No.301 (apart from dropping it and snapping the steps off - aaargh clumsiness strikes again!). The frosted-ness of FUD makes it quite hard to see what you are sanding, so after a good scrubbing (as per Knuckles' tutorials) I gave it a couple of splats of my favourite filler primer and left to dry overnight.
Hopefully this sh...

I've been naughty.
I'm supposed to be getting on with:
1. Building NWR No.301
2. Mounting the various parts of the P2/4 together
3. Finishing the C7/2 But you know what? I fancied another light railway engine. This may have been influenced by coming across this creation by Ted Polet, one of the modelling heroes of my youth (and still is today). ...
