Building a Coble Fishing Boat

Modelling has taken a bit of a back seat recently with the real world getting in the way.

Saying that-there's plans afoot to address this and a few little projects are on the go at present. One of them is to build a number of Coble fishing boats as found on the North East Coast-especially around Flamborough-Whitby coastline.

These vessels have a well defined keel and hull. For my project the the boats will be set in the 1950's as per this photo:

No kits exist of a 4mm scale Coble however the Zvedza Medieval Sailing Boat kit can be fettled into something resembling the boats in the photo above:

As you can see I've started making some modifications to the keel in these shots:

Here's the finished Coble-the first of a small flotilla! :)

Need to get some paint on it and thread up the mast/sail and add some crab/lobster pots.

Cheers,

Mark

Evening Mark,

That's an interesting project...and some nice mods going on there to begin with.

You didn't mention if this is part of a layout project or a project in its own right?

Also quite teasing is the small building which appears as a series of flat pack parts in pic 3 and has been assembled in the last shot - care to share? :D

Good to see you back posting again...

For anyone interested in modelling small craft, http://www.pen-and-sword.co.uk/Inshore-Craft-Paperback/p/3776 may be of use for information. (Usual disclaimer).

I've built a few of these Zvesda kits myself - though I paint the inside before adding the thwarts piece - and they do lend themselves to adaptations to represent a variety of traditional boats.

Is the small building a 'bash' of the Wills signalbox? Looks interesting whatever it is.

Thanks Pete, :)

There's another three to do yet in various guises! :D

As for a layout project there's a possibility...... ;) Watch this space after March :)

As for the flat pack-courtesy of Wills! :D

Thanks for those kind words as well.

Cheers,

Mark

What a lovely project. Look forward to seeing it all painted up.

Thanks Jez ;)

I'll get around to painting the coble soon.  Time to fire up the quatr airbrush! :D

Thanks,

Mark

Lovely link White Rabbit.  Thanks for posting.

Totally agree on the Zvedza kit. Very

The small building is a 'bash' of a a couple of 'flat pack' Wills kits that may turn into a station building for the 'FBLR' *

Cheers,

A very nice job so far. The main difference between the two craft appears to be the rig, with hte Zvedza kit being more of a standing rather than a dipping lug on the coble, This is easily sorted with a mast rake of about 20 degrees aft, andn the yard would be either lashed to the mast or laid on the thwarts. To complete the transformation, might I suggest increasing the tumblehome at the stern, possibly replacing the top strake with 10 or 15 thou plastic to finish of the transformation of medieval to Yorkshire ? You don't specify which scale you are modelling in, if 4mm, then this is quite miniature.

Nice One !

Pedantically, this kit's actually 1:72 scale rather than 'pure' OO. But I've used Preiser 1:87 figures with them and they look natural to my eye...

I've tended to replace the Zvesda mast with plastic rod (sorry, can't remember the diameter) as I don't like the 'lightning conductor' effect. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures to hand (it was an urgent job) but I did build three Cornish fishing boats based on this kit for a client a few years ago, including at least one lugger (dipping main and standing mizzen yawl rig).

Altering the tumblehome could be tricky - if anyone's managed it, I would be most interested to see pictures. To be fair to 46444, he has filed off quite a bit of plastic on the top strake, including the thole pins (early rollocks) and ornamental timberwork round the stern. Increasing the freeboard should be possible using 10/15 thou strip but it would certainly be delicate work. I favour the old smugglers' approach - lash (glue) some kegs to the windward thwart!
