Pre Group wagons for Trench sidings, mainly LNWR

For those that have known me for many years know that I have always had an interest in the LNWR and some years ago I was the newsletter editor for the LNWR Society. I have now decided to have a pregroup period for the layout (freight only!) and have over the past few weeks built 8 LNWR wagons, all from ratio kits. I have also added a few GWR wagons as the Lilleshall Co who had many pits in the area supplied loco coal to the GWR, Cambrian and North Staffs.

A few more wagons are waiting to be built along with a LRM LNWR 10 Brake van.
The trigger for this has been the announcement by London Road Models of a Ramsbottom 0-4-0 Saddle tank as one of these was allocated to the small trench Sidings loco shed.

This is the loco and what looks like a Shropshire Iron Company wagon.
Whilst I am waiting for that I have started on a conversion of a Bachmann 0-6-2 Coal Tank.

They're going to look a bit out of place behind a Crab, Jubilee or rebuilt Scot, though!

Brassey, yes all P4 and all compensated. I have tried to mix and match both the different brake gear and lettering as both changed in 1908. Still have more weathering to do on the underframes.

Dave, yes you are correct but they would look good on a LNWR freight on Holt/Delph!

Good to see another fellow P4 LNWR modeller (though I do have a foot in the GWR too).

Where did you come by the information that Lilleshall supplied loco coal to the GWR please? I thought they used Welsh steam coal exclusively.

Brassey, I will have to dig it out, but it makes sense for coal to be sourced from more local pits particularly to freight depots. Lilleshall coal was well thought of and also used for house coal.

As an Ironbridge resident I'm really interested in your progress. Those wagons look great, I guess there's no shortage of inspiration for local P.O. wagons too? Plenty of pits in the area each with their own wagons. The Ramsbottom 0-4-0 reminds me of the Lilleshall Co.s own 0-4-0. Lovely work, thanks for sharing.

Brassey, Bob Yates excellent book on the Lilleshall Co was the source of the info (page 92) where he said not only did the Lilleshall Co supply locomotive coal to the LNWR but also to the GWR, GCR (presumably delivered to the Wrexham area): Cambrian and North Stasfs Railway. I think the choice would have been driven by the quality of the coal and the shipping charges.

5&9 Models, thanks for the compliment. The only P.O. wagons that have ever been produced even by POWsides has been the Lilleshall Co and they owned the majority of the local pits. As for the other companies and pits, can’t find any photos. I have been researching the area for 50 years but it was a bit of a backwater so nobody took any photos! I produced a book last year The Railways of Telford for Crowod Press and hoped that that might draw out some more photos, but no joy.

Very nice work. The Ramsbottom 0-4-0 tank is delightful, I look forward to seeing it knocking those wagons around (in due course!).
