Benchwork - Part 2
More benchwork completed this weekend. I built the the left-hand side benchwork that will carry the express lines around the layout and the area where the Tyne Yard will sit. I'm still trying to finalize plans for what I want the yard to look like, but at least have the dimensions pretty much set for the area that I'll make available. I need more 1x3" before I frame out that section, but will be quick to then do so.
I drilled holes in all the cross pieces around the benchwork to run the DCC and aux bus wires. I also sanded down everything to a flush surface ready for the base boards to be attached. This is how all the benchwork now looks:
(Hopefully those old kitchen appliances will be taken away for recycling next weekend ) Here's a close-up of some of the benchwork joints. The basic process for each section was:
- Cut the 1x3" lengths and cross pieces, pre-drill and screw together the top frame
- Cut the four legs, square them, pre-drill and screw to the frame
- Cut the 45 degree angle support pieces, ensure legs are still square, then pre-drill and screw to the frame and legs
Hopefully everything then comes out square and level when placed up right! Woodworking skills aside, the floor in the shed isn't perfectly level, so I did have to use wooden shims on some of the legs. I then cut the shims down to length so they're not as noticeable and won't get knocked out when I'm moving around or place boxes underneath.
I still have to do the narrow benchwork along the front of the layout, right in front of where I'm standing in the main photo. That section will end up being the Tyne River with the High Level Bridge carrying the train lines. I'm probably going to build two levels of benchwork here - the lower level will be 15-18" wide for me to model the river and quayside areas, with the bridge probably about 8" wide to carry the three lines across it. I need to figure out scale dimensions for that, but should be quick to then put together.
Other than that, it's all ready for the baseboards. Hopefully I'll get those cut and installed next weekend.
