Track templates and rough layout

Little quiet the last few weeks as I've waiting to to order track. But, that order has now shipped and should arrive in the next couple of days!

I'd originally been planning on using Atlas HO gauge code 100 track since that's a lot more available here in the US, but when I was then trying to figure out point motors, there are no electrofrog points in code 100. I looked at a couple of other more US-centric manufacturers, but also ran in to similar problems. Ideally, I had wanted to use Peco OO gauge code 100 but was put off by potential costs and shipping, however it actually ended up cheaper overall to ship Peco track from Hattons than to buy Atlas track locally in the US with free shipping. Go figure! Super excited to actually be able to lay true Peco OO gauge track rather than what's technically Atlas HO gauge.

So, just a couple of photos showing some rough track planning based on the Peco point templates and some old HO mis-match of track I had lying around to get a feel for things. This is looking across the throat on the south side of the station:

In this next wider overview of the station, there will be a couple additional lines for platforms in the top right hand corner. The left hand side will have one line that runs through to the top as mainly a freight line, and will also have a long siding come off it. Just didn't have enough old track laying around to put it all in place!

And setting up some trains to see how they'd look sitting in Newcastle Central :) Yes, I need more coaches. A lot more coaches... Track work is expensive enough right now!

Hopefully this weekend I'll be able to start loosely laying down track once the order from Hattons is delivered. I'm going to take my time, especially given how much there is to do around the station, and then wiring it all is going to be an effort in itself. I'm looking to use Seeps point motors, but they'll be coming in a later order once I have track work mostly in place.

It is looking good so far and I wish you well with your project. Living outside of the Uk myself, I know how difficult it can be to source what you require. I look forward to your future entries to see how it is coming along.

Thanks for the support! I'm torn in that I also have some HO locos and rolling stock from BNSF, Union Pacific, and Missouri Pacific, and do very much like some of the US-based models and layouts. I noted in an earlier blog post I'll likely at some point end up with a shelf layout of some yet-to-be-determined size so I can also model that. My love of OO gauge is from childhood, but it does make it a lot harder (and expensive) to get models from the UK. Occasionally OO gauge models show up on eBay in the US, but most of what I have has come from the UK.

Always nice to get to the tracklaying stage.  Waiting for parcels to arrive can be difficult, especially if they are late arriving.  You've made an excellent job on the baseboarding and is looking good to get a sense of the track layout in situ.

I'm sure you'll be itching to get the first train rolling!

Thanks, it was nice to see how things will start to go together. First delivery from Hattons showed up, so I started laying some track last weekend. New blog post coming soon. Definitely want to get trains rolling, but a long way to go to get everything wired up. Still debating what, if anything, to do for track bed before I attach the track and solder on all the dropper wires, etc.
