Laying track and underlay

Lot of work and progress in the past couple of weeks. After receiving delivery of all the Peco track from Hattons, I've slowly started laying it down along with foam Woodlands Scenic Track-Bed. Here's a couple of photos from the track work going in to place. First, from the north of the station:

And then another the shows an overview of the whole station trackwork, complete with some pins to hold things in place :)

I had a little trouble with clean cuts from the Xuron track cutters - I wasn't originally filing them down as I didn't think it was needed, but it clearly was and provided much smoother finishes and made the track joiners go on much easier. So, there's a couple of lengths of flextrack I probably should cut again as I've ended up with gaps a little too big between the different sections. I have plenty of track, and this is still a bit of a learning experience. It's also hard when so much of the trackwork was fluid and moving in trying to figure out the curve of the flextrack, so now that most of it is in place, it should be easier to get the curves right on the additional sections to re-cut.

I've found that a lot of what I'm wanting to try and share is easier done in video, so while I'll keep this blog to share some photos and build steps along the way, I'll also then put together a little more detail via video on a YouTube channel. Feel free to subscribe to the channel to follow along and learn more as the build progresses! Here I show an overview of all the track work in place, along with all of the underlay completed throughout the station:

Nice progress. The station layout looks great.  Building platforms will be a good test with all those curves.  How many Mk3's will be on your HST's?

Thanks. I started work on points and gluing track on the south end of the platform. I'll hopefully get the curved track and then north side point-work done in the next week. I'm itching to get trains running, but can't do the rest of the layout until all this glued in place!

I'm going to be running 6+2 for the HSTs, or most of them anyway. I've seen full 8+2 rakes, and I feel they just look too long on a layout. 6+2 seems a decent compromise of still having a good length train, while keeping it to model layout. I'm slowly building up what will become 2 first class, 1 buffet, 3 seconds for each. TGS' seem a little hard to come by, but I have found a couple. A least a couple of the platforms should be able to hold the Class 91 with Mk4s, the other platforms should comfortably take a 6+2 HST with Mk3s, though one looks rather short now that I see it on the layout. From looking at videos online there is a lot of DMU traffic that uses the main platforms that I'll likely replicate. Part of the compromise with the layout was to accommodate a 6+2 rake in the size I had to build!
