2mm Point Rodding Stools - Is it worth it?

Hello smile.gif

Well, that is the question going through my head today. Its something that has been bugging me for quite a while now. I really wanted to do point rodding on Highclere and the stools were kinda like the 'missing link'. I managed to persuade Ivan of Southwark Bridge Models to reduce an etch of his point rodding stools down to 2mm scale and as they arrived today through the post I couldnt wait to have a go...

I think they look great but will anyone notice them? Let me know what you think...

P.S. Thank you Ivan smile.gif

Hello Missy,

You've already answered your question:

" ...I really wanted to do point rodding on Highclere ... "

If it's something you really want to do, then do it :)

It's the sort of detail I'd notice and appreciate - equally, others wouldn't.

Ultimately it's about what makes you happy in your wonderful world of modelling :)

Hi Missy, well you've been entrepenurial as ever - I can't believe you already have the etches!

Maybe it would be easier to judge if the trial examples were set in their context, ie on the layout. Probably you've already tried that - if so how did it look?

Quite apart from how it looks, there's always the wow factor of course! "This layout features 2mm point rodding stools" etc etc cool.gif

BTW I really enjoy your tags biggrin.gif

Thank you guys smile.gif

Im afraid that is as close as my camera will do. I have all my macro lenses stacked on top of each other to take that picture! I think I will have to get a magnifying lens though. I am starting to struggle a bit with them.

Personally yes.

I saw a test piece by Geoff Jones using the Association etches, the other week. The general conclusion was; it's not the end of the world if it's there, but you really do feel it's presence when it is.

If you're going to model the point rodding then you need something to represent the stools. I'd have thought that the only reason for not using these is if they're too fiddly to produce and a simpler alternative does the job as well.

I reckon it depends on how many you'll have to do, how far away they are from the normal viewing position and how much patience you have. Frankly they look as if they would drive me nuts and I'd be looking for a simpler solution. In the end it's your decision, and we'll all be truly impressed if you do use them :icon_wow:

Hello Missy - I recently bought a magnifying lamp and it has made the world of difference! I'd definitely recommend one. Mine has a 'daylight bulb', so I can paint at night and be confident colours will still look right in the cold light of the next day :)

I would carry on with them Missy, seeing as the whole layout is to such a superbly high standard you will most likely regret it later if you leave them out.

Mind you I'm glad I'm not the one assembling them!!!
