Rambling around my workbench

Hello :)

I though it would be appropriate that I updated my blog to being all you good folk up to date with what I have been upto recently. The modelling mojo has remained and things are gradually moving forward...

The main project recently has been the 14xx. It came about from a bit of desperation to build an engine and all my other 'current' projects floundering because of missing parts, incorrect drawings, etc. The chassis is one of Chris Higgs etched creations (I think it was a test version) and the body came from one of my Dapol 14xx engines I have. I have learnt a few lessons building this including opening out the muffs sightly so the wheels are not a very tight fit, adding 'simpson springs' to name but a couple and I am pleased with how its turned out. The engine runs alright too with its 80(ish):1 gear ratio and still managed to keep the cab clear plus adding the gap under the boiler. All thats remaining to add now are the numberplates (once I get hold of them),couplings, and a good dusting judging by that photo! Im not expecting it to pull a heavy freight or anything but it seems to manage a coach or two without any problems.

The next in line is the 56xx which I picked up from Ebay. The origin of it is unknown but its becomming apparent that it could possibly be the langley whitemetal kit. If so, then its very well built. Plans for this include detailing of the body and chassis (similar to the 14xx) and I need to work out what to do with the boiler as it doesnt seem to be sitting right at the moment. I have made a start on it already though by shot blasting the body.

This is a favour for a friend. Its a con-cor American steam engine of some description but it was passed onto me as a non-runner. As you can see the whole thing has been pulled apart and cleaned, as normal the gears and bearings were full of dirty grease which judging by the (shocking) wheel bearings / electrical pickup design might explain why it wasnt working.

That brings you guys up to date, see you at the Abingdon show or maybe Ally Pally (on Sat)?

Missy :)

Blimey that was quick, it still had lots of metal coloured bits when I saw it at Shepton last week. Look very nice, if it hasn't got a chip in it we can give it a spin on Tucking Mill at Abingdon- how about the Wisbech coach, a cattle wagon and a toad - can you see where I'm heading:-))

Hi Jerry.

Well, when you saw it, most of the work was done apart from the painting. I havent done that much on it since then really. It hasnt got a decoder yet so I am sure it will be available for service at the Abingdon show next weekend.

I've told you before about putting photos of 4mm scale models on here and pretending that they're 2mm scale! ;)

Seriously, that 14xx is looking really good. I'm looking forward to seeing the 56xx being turned out to the same standard (complete with lots of lovely lining.... :paint:)

Nah - they're 0-gauge! :)  When I first scrolled down to the first photo, my immediate thought was that it was a prototype photo!  I use the same technique of a real sky 'backdrop' for my own model pics.  I think it works very well.

There's definitely something odd about that 56xx boiler though - in the photo it looks to have a reverse taper behind the smokebox.

I'll hope to see these for real at Abingdon.

Nice work Julia. I would echo Mike's comment about the 56xx, it could be the boiler at the firebox end is set lower than the smokebox end. Usually the tapered bits are set with the bottom edge level so the centre line is inlined.

Yes you are right Dave.

I think its more to do with the body not attached to the chassis correctly after I took it off for shot blasting rather than a fault with the actual body. Thank you though and I will check it.

Thank you RobboPete.

The chassis totally transforms the LIMA model, it slots together really well too. The only real problem I had was figuring out what boxes go where underneath.

Of course, my square shank buffers are what really makes the model though! :P

Hi Julia.

Lovely work as always. The 56XX is looking great, especially given its apparent heritage!

See you at Abingdon!

I saw the 56xx at Ally Pally on Saturday, and it's not the Langley monstrosity, which has a distinctly oval boiler. It's more likely the Beaver kits version, which was available a few years ago, and then vanished from the market. The manufacturer has since resurfaced, and I saw him at Expong 2 years ago, picked up his catalogue and ordered a few (which are still sitting in my gloat box). He doesn't yet have a web presence to the best of my knowledge.
