Is it time to admit I have a problem?

I think I might be addicted to the SER/SECR/SR R and R1 classes...

From left to right:
-standard Wrenn R1 body (will become an R class someday)
-Wrenn R1 body with 3D printed cab detail and cab window infill piece
-R1 body being converted back to R class with new boiler and cab
-R/R1 class 3D printed chassis (currently in development), will go under the R class conversion
-detailed Wrenn R1 body on the first test print of the 3D printed chassis (unpowered)
-original R1 in SR olive green, which has sentimental value hence why it hasn't been messed about with!

The similar version I have is a BR Black Dublo R1 in front of my scratch and 3D part built O Gauge R1 on a Lima 4F Chassis. You can never have too many R1s. Maybe one of them could have the front splashes altered as in some photos different members of the class have fully curved ones unlike the Wrenn/Dublo one.

Great collection though, keep up the good modelling.

Thanks! Definitely one to try when I can locate some decent photos, though it might be a slightly more difficult modification - I think those ones had the sandboxes under the footplate instead.

Hi,

just found this blog entry - the R/R1 stud looks good - has there been any progress?

It's an interesting loco, but how accurate would you say the Wrenn body is, notwithstanding the moulded handrails and filled-in boiler, of course?

All the best,

Mark

Hi Mark,

There are quite a few compromises on the Wrenn body, and in the chassis too. I intend to do a proper comparison some day.

There has been progress in my fleet - I've finished a back-conversion to an R Class using a Hornby Jinty chassis (see pic), and I'm currently working on a 3D printed R Class body shell to go on the Oxford Dean Goods chassis. This is what I'll compare to the Wrenn version as my one is dimensionally accurate to the drawings.

Hi,

many thanks for such a quick reply! And may I say what great progress!

The Class R with the domeless boiler and smokebox wing plates looks fantastic, and I presume the lined black was the Company's goods livery? I should perhaps admit that I know little of the SE&CR (other than the fabulous Wainwright livery, of course!), but my interest was piqued just yesterday by a detailed Wrenn R1 appearing on a Facebook modellers group page. A little net surfing followed and a search here on RMWeb found your blog entry, and being something of a dilletante, I find myself quite fancying one - particularly the 'R' now that I've seen your example.

May I ask, do you plan to make the Class R 3D-print available? Cos I'd like one..... ;)

Cheers,

Mark

Thanks, nice to know it's appreciated :)

The lined black is the livery of the SER, which merged with the LCDR to form the SECR in 1899. The R Class was an SER design dating from 1888, so my depiction is of the loco in the first few years of it's life.

I will be making the 3D printed R Class available, if you want to keep up with that I suggest you follow my main thread here - it has a whole load of other projects in it too, lots of SECR and industrial stuff. I update that thread as and when I make progress on projects, so I'll be putting an update on the R Class up later today.

Hi again!

Thanks for the additional info and the update on the R project - I'll make sure I follow the link to your thread, and I'll have a good look through previous posts, too. It's funny what sparks an interest, and how one thing leads to another - I can see myself embarking on a small SER/SECR layout in the near future!

Thanks again and best regards,

Mark
