Llanglydwen vintage photos

Harlequin

The entry for Llanglydwen station on disused-stations.org.uk was recently updated with three high-res vintage photos.
Here

(You have to click the "here" links to see the larger versions.)

The new photos are wonderfully evocative and look like photos of a model. The station, a small hamlet, a road, a river, a bridge and a level crossing are all compressed into a small area with verdant countryside all around.

It's almost too good to be true!

Some lovely period shots there.  I grew up pretty close to the old "Cardi-Bach", but long after closure; always fancied the idea of a my own private railway running South into the woods from Llanglydwen.

Note that the prairie 4557 was a long-time regular in the line, but 4558 and 4559 were also based at Whitland.  I have see a photo of a double header at Boncath with two of the three passing the third going the other way.  I wonder how often that happened?

Probably once every weekday .

l believe that there is some info on here via the 'Woodstowe' layout thread, post no. 40 that refers to operations at Cardigan, the O/p was using a copy of the timetable for the line in the mid 50's.  As I remember  it  required all three locos simultaneously to be at the terminus at least once each day-  lots of shunting for a small branch line.

Steve.

I omitted to mention that this compact area also contains: the signal box, which is just at the end of the short platform, a goods siding and the Pen-y-bont Inn just behind the level crossing.

This beautiful little place was made to be modelled.
