Starting a model railway.

Hi all, I am thinking about starting a layout which I could possibly take to model shows in the future. Any ideas/comments are welcome. Some basic ideas are:
Baseboards will be made from plywood.
​Will be and end to end layout.
Length = 7ft
Width = 4ft
Era = 1982-1994 (preferably 1989)
Any more suggestions are very welcome.

Will there be an operating well in the middle?

If so, what dimensions?
