Boxfile Kyle - Point taken...

Good Morning - Fresh start was made on the turnout last night and with a cold beer to steady my nerves ;) things were significantly better than the last attempt. The chairs for the straight rail have been added, the frog has been made again but the curved rail is only pinned in place. I will need to redo the common crossing a third time, but solely due to my own ham fisted soldering skills when connecting the rails beneath for electrical continuity and alignment. I will be in contact [bryn] to discuss how I can crack this! Thanks also to Dave M for advice on laying the sleepers prior to threading the rail.

These EASITRAC turnout components are beautifully crafted and I look forward to seeing the first of only two turnouts for this layout in operation very soon...after all...I understand that the Bachfar 24 release is very soon and that would be ideal for undertaking thorough track testing :icon_biggrin: - Few pics attached...

Kris - Thanks - I must admit, I recall that I found building track for Coombe Junction using Code 40 and plain rail a bit of a challenge too!

Mark - Thanks also - slowly but surely - the advantage of a boxfile layout is that once this turnout is complete, then that board is finished in terms of track so overall the track building will be 50% complete! Have had a few thoughts on how to do the fiddleyards so will post some sketches tomorrow...

Thanks Missy - I will try to post only positive things in my diatribes from now on!

Looking good so far.

Just one question though. Have you seen a turnout built from the Easitrack components ballasted? I ask because I have just joined the 2mm Association today and was wondering whether to use the moulded bases or just use sleeper timbering with a template.

Cheers

Martin,

Thanks and welcome to the world of 2mmFS!

It's a fair question and a good one - To be honest, to date, I have only seen turnouts completed prior to ballasting. The base is quite thin as with the small low spacers between the plain track, however a thin layer of ballast should cover it, albeit, it looks like it will need to be done extremely carefully.

You could perhaps speak with Bryn of this forum who is currently building his turnouts off templot plans using sleeper timbering, including a beautiful 3 way turnout.

Over to you Bryn!

Feel free to jump in anyone who has seen or ballasted an EASITRAC turnout...

Hi Pete,

Thanks for your reply. I bought Templot over two years ago and only recently learned how to properly use it so my plan was to just print of a track plan and use standard turnout sleepers as I have done the same previously in 00 gauge. Seeing these EASITRAC bases made me wonder if they were any good. They seem a lot quicker than the traditional way.

Cheers

Martin, Hi

For sure, the plain track is much quicker and EASIER. In terms of the turnouts, I am not the best to advise as I have only ever built one turnout to date using PCB + code 40 plain rail ( all my layouts tend to have few points!!) but so far I am very impressed by the components and the process. My problem is my soldering skills are severely embarassing and if I can improve on that then I will be happier. But in answer to your question posed, I think the turnout bases and sleeper bases are really a great step forward.

Try and tune it to the 2mm VAG emails as there is a lot of discussion about the turnouts at present.

Pete
