My fellow Americans :O

Whilst a little more detailing progress has taken place the last few days, I will wait until I return from the UK to add a blog entry to cover those.

Meanwhile, when I first found and joined the RMweb (circa 2009 I think) my very first entry to introduce myself and the layout gave a link to a freebie website that I had previously set up. As the addiction of RMweb gradually followed the website was neglected in favour of a RM layout thread which eventually became this blog. I had always intended to redo the website, as the freewebs hosting got on my goat due to the huge advert dominating the top of the page...of which you have no control of content...

So yesterday, in between the kids disputing about absolutely everything, I found that weebly do freebie websites without huge ads dominating the pages. Using one of their minimalist templates (I'm not big on the green but I can't change that) I have created a new base for CJM.

I still intend to detail the construction of the layout on the blog here so it is more a snapshot of the idea and model rather than a detailed account.

If of interest it can be found here at coombejunctionmoorswater and I would welcome any comments you may have...

Many thanks in advance,

Pete

Well, I have to be honest Pete, I've no idea bout setting up these sites to create your own pages... but I think that what you've created looks very nice; professional too (I'd expect nothing less from you though). Some good historical background to your study and teasers of what it might eventually all deliver.

Colour of the background looks nice and not destracting at all.

Good stuff!

Enjoy Cornwall... hope the sunshine holds!

Many thanks Jon - TBH, me and technology have a strained relationship so the weebly site is great as its straightforward and works by drag and drop...if you prep a folder of selected images on your desktop then it almost falls together itself.

I hear the forecast might be changing this Friday...don't tell me..'cloudy with sunny spells or sunny with possibility of showers'...I'm in the wrong profession :D

Like the web site Pete. We've been thinking about having a more 'static' presence for St Ruth too.

I guess that the ad on your old site was a manifestation of the 'no free lunch' syndrome. Web hosts cost money to run, so they need a business model that works otherwise they will go the same way as the late lamented fotopic site.

So what's in it for them?

Thanks Andy - Good question...I assume if you are happy with the product then eventually you upgrade to a subscription to have a little more control?

This one has a small plug at the bottom right hand corner...which I have no problem with...its just the previous one was a huge header...and obliterated most of your 'prime screen space' pushing your content off the bottom.

I just like things plain and simple me...;)

Nice site Pete, the page with the dries has really nicely framed images and looks superb.

Also, the pictures are a great advert for a certain manufacturer's Class 37!

Hi Pete,

Duly added your website to my 'Favourites'!

Noted in your rolling stock section about the use of Class 25s and Class 37s. Frankly I would stick with the 37s for now Pete as the Farish 25 is completely beyond redemption and it would be a shame to put that blight on your excellent workmanship. As both Bachmann and Dapol have made their announcements up to the end of 2013 it looks like it will be mid-decade before any possibility of an improved Class 25.

Enjoy your hols!

Alex, hi - many thanks. I must admit I am quite enjoying modelling the gritty industrial stuff as a contrast to the leafy green bits...

Thanks also Will - I'll have to add Farish along with Ikea to my list of Sponsors :D

Thanks also to David (Kylestrome) for contacting me offline to highlight a typo...now sorted David...thanks again!

Many thanks David - I feel a bit guilty as the Farish 25 is my main test loco and has completed a lot of work trundling up and down to date...perhaps Dapol can surprise us though - you must be well chuffed with the promised class 33!

Thoroughly enjoyed that Pete! I had forgotten about your fantastic little scale model of the layout being exhibited, I sent the link to my Dad, an architect now retired, whose approach to things is quite like yours, except like all good architects, he produces the plans and lets someone else do the building.....

Thanks a lot Tom - I hope your father likes it. Agreed that its good to respect all the other members of the team and stick to what you do best...my building skills stop at Ikea shelves ;)

Lovely Pete, duely bookmarked! Having had some involvement in web design in the past, thats not at all bad for a freebie! It's nice to see the early gestation of the layout.

Thanks also Tom - I might add another gallery sometime which shows progression from a set of white shelves to where we are now...but the previous incarnation was a little like that and I wanted this to feel a bit more polished in its appearance...

I very much like it Pete:

Lack of clutter ('less is more'), clearly signposted, strong font contrasted nicely with dark grey (not black) background and excellent photography plus your wonderful sketches and plans.

There are two things that make me 'repeat visit' such websites -

(1) Inspiration (which you offer aplenty), and

(2) Tutorials or similar 'How I Did This' type articles of one sort or another ... and that was one thing I couldn't find. I know there is a link to RMWeb - but that's to the website in general rather than your blog in particular - and if I wasn't familiar with the virtual geography, I'd be a bit frustrated at being made to work to find where your blog was. Just thought I'd mention it :)

Website bookmarked :)

Mark, hi - Thanks very much...and the feedback is much appreciated too.The link to my blog is something I can hopefully adjust with ease - the RM web 2011 challenge (covered under Moorswater Viaduct) is set up as a link to my summary topic for the comp. In terms of the 'how too's', I need to give that a bit more thought.

Julia's new external blog is an excellent example, whilst I am almost doing the reverse by keeping the detail on the forum and summarising the information on the website. Something for me to ponder whilst on my hols...

Very nice Pete. Like so many others I have it in my favourites list (but then so was your blog) :-)

Many thanks too Ian - I need to adjust my PC settings as everytime I run C-Cleaner I lose all my favourites!...

Hi Pete

Been off line a bit so have only just started to catch up. The web site is superb and is a great way to demonstrate your design process. I agree with the lack of clutter comment and it is much easier to understand your planning process and the rationale behind it - those drawings and mini plan models are brilliant. Agree with you re the comment about the build process being the more pleasurable part of the hobby. Fantastic stuff and hope you intend to keep both RMweb blog and the website updated.

Hope it's not too hot in Spain, but it has got to be better than here in Ireland - June and July have been a complete wash out and my veg patch has suffered badly despite much attention. Modeling on hold a while as the garden has had to take precedence, but I think I'm getting withdrawal symptoms so it is back to the loft for a bit!

Regards

Mike

The website - does what it says on the tin, no scrolling, obvious where to click, no nasty surprises - all good, as is the content, which nearly went without saying.

Having said that, I'm not sure about the font used (Play?) in this instance. It's a bit squarish and tries to be "futuristic" in a 70s kind of stylee, which doesn't necessarily match the subject matter (for me anyway).

Try writing "Starship Enterprise" in that font!

All the best, ewd

Hi Mark - Many thanks for this - Yes, this time I am hoping to keep both up to date...and possibly add some sub menus for further content.

Spain has been incredibly hot of late...but it needs something like that to remind me why we came here...certainly wasn't for the good of the economy...

Chris, hi

Many thanks also - I completely agree about the font....I kept thinking Space 1999 whilst writing it for some reason ;) but being a freebie website, there's nothing I can do about it....you are stuck with the header font unless I find another template without it. Believe me, I was wrestling with the font for some time as I prefer simple...and no caps either!

Incidentally, I have been preparing the baseboards for PWIAB this afternoon...:D
