Creating N15 455 Sir Launcelot

No workbench entries for ages then a couple come along at once....

 

As some of you will know, I model the Southern Railway between 1946 and 1949. I am currently creating a collection of the build varients of the N15 'King Arthur' class and also the livery variations at the time of being in ex wartime black or Bulleid malachite green.

When the N15 “King Arthur†locomotives were first introduced by Hornby in 2007 there were a number of versions that included: the Urie or Manusell cab variations, Lemaitre large diameter chimney example and two out of the three tender variations with the Urie style bogie 8 wheel 5000 gallon and the Ashford 3500 gallon 6 wheel versions.

 

Now the third tender variation has been released by Hornby as 30452 “Sir Meliagrance†in the Pete Waterman Collection range. Hornby have married the watercart tender chassis from their T9 with a complete new tooling for the tender body; correctly incorporating the additional watertank “domed†top, the additional coal rails and also the splayed out tender doors.

 

I have decided to repaint this is 455 'Sir Launcelot' in the black livery. This weekend I stripped the loco and tender of all removeable items such as pipework,.glazing smoke delectors and the such before giving a light coat of Halfords plastic primer before a top coat of Halfords satin black. The next stage will be to repaint the copper pipework that could not be removed, pick out the reversing lever in burnished steel and paint the cab roof and smokebox in matt black.

Looking good there Graham, did you remove the boiler backhead while you were stripping Sir Meliagrance down for respray?

Hi, I do not remove the boiler backhead or any fittings inside the cab I simply roll and fold a piece of kitchen towel or a use a piece of foam and stuff it in to the cab to mask the area from paint spray. Its simple, quick and seems to work for me.
