Ropley planning continues

Hi all.

Planning continues for the Ropley shed project. After seemingly looking at every photo of Ropley on the net, I noticed a few changes which were not included in the original plan drawn from Google Earth. The main alteration is the addition of the recently built (then subsequently rebuilt following fire) carriage & wagon shed and the extra line installed. The station loop also appears to have been extended at some point.

So, V2.0 of the plan has now been drawn up and looks something like this:

One thing that did strike me about the plan was that without scenery it does look more like the entry to a mainline station than a preserved branchline! So much for easy trackwork

I've also quickly printed it out full size to see if it would fit into the planned size of the baseboards and guess what, it didn't! It's not far off though so I think an additional foot will need to be added to the board in order to fit everything in. It is possible the C&W shed will need to be shortened a touch which may not be a bad thing other wise it would rather dominate the front right of the scene.

Hopefully baseboard construction can start early next week and a site visit is planned for next weekend to get photos of the sheds & details so work on these can start too.

Cheers all.

Tom.

Is that the depth of the board in the last shot? Looks like you've got a reasonable amount of space to do the surrounding area some justice rather than just loads of track - I guess the beauty of 2mm

Hi James.

Yes, that's more or less where the back scene will be. The board will probably be about 1.5 feet wide.

Tom, a lovely location to model. My Grandfather used to take me there on days out from hertfordshire when I was a youngster... down by train from W'loo to Alton... then bus to Ropley... long before the extension to the east. I vaguely recall our first outing when trains had reached Medsted &FMs. Then in recent years taking my boys there for the Thomas days out (by far the best we've seen)... and some recent galas I managed to escape away to... and one friday on my way home from a Business trip (only a slight detour), popping in to the yard to ssee what was being warmed for the weekend's traffic.. a lovely quiet afternoon, with the birdsong and insects buzzing to accompany the gentle hiss of steam and copious quantities of fragrant coal smoke emanating from two Bulleids and a Standard. Such a lovely place. I can't wait to see how this develops

Good luck
