Ropley - D-Day

Hi all.

Looks like the PW gang have moved in!

After a few trials, I've settled on the treemendus Normandy earth powder for the ballast on the main line. First the area is sprayed with Railmatch sleeper grime, the rail painted and then the ballast is fixed in place with Kleer.

Track laying in the yard is now mostly complete with just the one point left to build, so a more comprehensive update is coming soon!

Thanks chaps!

Looks very tidy and fine-grained. Is the Normandy Earth stony, or something softer?

Hi Will. The nearest thing I've seen to the Normandy Earth powder is sand. It's definitely not crushed stone or similar. I'm using this primarily because it's the closest colour to the ballast in use at Ropley I could find!

Nice work Tom...assume you spray/dribble the kleer on dry laid ballast?

Hi Pete. The Kleer is applied with the end of a paintbrush. Once the first drop has been taken up by the ballast, capillary action takes over and it's just a case of adding more drops as you move along. It's a little more time consuming, but I've never found a method of spraying ballast that doesn't result in some disturbance of the dry ballast, and if there is one thing I hate, it's trying to force damp ballast back into shape!

This is the same view but in slightly better lighting conditions than this morning:

Cheers,

Really neat Tom. I've used Kleer for years as a varnish with Tamiya matt medium to get the right level of 'dullness'. I've used it to fix sand loads in N gauge wagons but not for ballast.......here goes!
