Ropley - The little things

Spot the difference?!

Hi all.

Taking advantage of the thoroughly rubbish weather outside today, I've tackled a few smaller details which were preventing ballasting moving further down the line towards the station. I had previously completed up to the area where point rodding crosses under the mainline to reach the wheel drop road points but there were a few detail items relating to the ground signal controlling exit from the yard area.

And again.

The (interlocking??) mechanism was made using small offcuts of plastic strip, whilst the base for the ground signal was made from off cuts of point timbers left over from track construction. The crank to the west of the mechanism came from a 2mm Scale Association etch. Once work has finished in this area and the ground signal is built, I'll attach the wire that connects all these together!

Also added are the two timbers between the rails by the water tower, and also some cable trunking which is from Ratio. This has been laid to represent the rather uneven nature of the prototype! This was sprayed with Pasticote suede paint, before being dry brushed with various greys and then black to try and represent concrete.

Now these small details have been added, I can crack on with ballasting towards the Western end of the layout.

Cheers all!

Tom.

I am always amazed by the level of detail you managed to achieve! Is the cable trough from Ratio or home made?

Thanks Stephen!

The cable trough is Ratio. I was going to make my own but having looked at the Ratio stuff I decided I probably couldn't do any better!

Hi Tom,

I've been watching your layout progress and this is really starting to look amazing. I think the attention to detail is so important, especially in this scale.

Fantastic!

Best regards,

Looking superb Tom. The last two photos are probably the most realistic I have ever seen in 2mm/N!

I noticed you have fishplates on your track joints, how did you make them?

Thanks Missy :)

The fish plates are another 2mmSA etch from shop 1. Very fine and I wasn't sure if it was going to be worth adding them, but I'm glad I did! Still a few more to go though!

Lovely detailing work Tom.

You have made an excellent job combining the Easitrac and other components.

Which method are you going to use to clean the track?...would be a shame to damage any of it in the process :(

Looks really nice. I love the oily sheen and the contrast between the plain rail and pointwork.

Here here. Wonderfully delicate work and you've captured the mucky/greasy areas perfectly.

Lovely!

It's a detector bar. The interlocking proper would be elsewhere. This is a secondary safety device. If for any reason it had been possible for the signalman to operate the lever for the connection fully but the tie bar had not moved correctly or at all then this item would prevent the signal being pulled off.

Many thanks everyone! :)

Hi Pete.

At the moment I use a piece of kitchen roll tightly folded up and then soaked in White Spirit, which seems to do the job nicely, but once the point rodding, signal cable post, incline posts etc are installed I might have to come up with something which is only slightly wider than the line to avoid ripping them all out!

Thanks Rich, I'm not really up on the intricacies of Semaphore signalling, so always good to find out what these things do!

Cheers,

Tom.

Looking really good Tom. I particularly like the attention to detail (the fishplates, cable trunking, etc) really effective!

Flippin' eck Tom this is shaping up to be some model. I'd been wondering whether this section of Ropley yard would make a good micro/mini layout and this proves it. Although you're making me wonder whether abandoning N gauge was such a smart move... Keep up the good work!
