Ropley - Waterworks

An Alton bound service departs from Ropley.

Hi all.

Something I have been almost about to start for a while now, has finally been started, namely the water tower. This is quite a key feature of the yard and so I wanted to try and include as much detail as possible here.

The first stage is to model the base. This includes the drain area, concrete base and small brick building which I can only assume houses some sort of pump for the tower. The prototype looks like this:

The model is all made up from various bits of plastic card, the base being scribed to represent joins & cracks in the concrete. The grate was made by gluing stretched sprue to a small square of plastic card, before painting the whole thing black and then dry brushing on a yellow/green mix to represent the real thing as seen above. Kleer is being applied in layers to represent the stagnant water! The concrete effect was produced in the same way as the cable trunking. A spray of plasti-Kote suede effect paint, followed by a dry brush with light grey and then black before the addition of some weathering from powders.

The small brick building was made using printed brick paper and the various electrical boxes from various offcuts of plastic. The drain covers are taken from a spare 4mm etch I had laying around from a previous project. Not 100% accurate, but close enough at this size!

This whole section will now be bedded into the surrounding area before the water tower itself and the diesel fuelling point just beyond are added along with some final detailing such as hoses etc. I also need to find a suitable 2mm scale dustbin!

Cheers all,

Tom.

Even more incredible modelling in 2mm scale.

You certainly have a good eye for detail, there is more detail here than some top 4mm scale layouts I have seen.

I'm well impressed, I hope I can do as well with my efforts in 00!

Cheers!

really impressive Tom accurate small details like that really add to the feel of the model

Superb as ever Tom. The oily gunge around the track where the locos stand is particularly effective.

Thanks all for the comments. They are much appreciated!

This afternoon I've put together the shelter for the diesel fuel pump. Just the pump itself to make now, which I'll do tomorrow hopefully!

Thanks again,

Gosh blimey....

...If you raise the bar any higher it'll want an anti-collision beacon on top...

The fence in the foreground of the first prototype picture is going to be tricky to replicate?

Thanks Will!

I think the fence will need to be a custom etch. I haven't been able to find any with the same inverted U along the top available commercially. The panels you can see in the photo above are the same as that along the embankment, just welded to feet so they can be moved around (Has flashback to setting out lots of fence panels ;) )

Hi Tom

Wow! This is superb work, and I think the overall finish and look you are getting is nothing short of exceptional. Thanks for posting!

I struggle to navigate the blogs and I have only just discovered this!
