Wish they'd mentioned these were planned. To be honest I wouldnt buy anything from the old Shawplan range these days, the chances are at some point in the future it will all end up being replaced with much finer stuff given that for the most part the old range just isnt an improvement over the originals. That said there is still a place for it, as I'm sure a fair few people will moan at the price of the new version in comparison with the old (the new ones are priced at ??10.50 per loco). If you havent used the etch yet and would prefer the new version, probably worth dropping Brian an email and seeing if you can arrange to return them and buy the new ones. He has also just released new versions of the Class 56 roof grills, (and a bunch of other new 56 bits) and has a class 50 roof grill nearing completion as well.... Link to comment

To be honest, i'll stick with the ones i have, as they'll be a visual improvement over the Vi ones. Those new ones do look the dogs danglies though...... Link to comment
dave_long 343 Posted November 23, 2009 They are definately an improvement, and 1 that will be on my workbench very soon. I'd spent out before getting to the new 47 grilles. Can I ask what glue did you use? Link to comment
RMweb Gold The Fatadder 18,296 Posted November 23, 2009 RMweb Gold I just used Sainsburys own brand superglue. could possibly benefit from using a slightly thicker superglue though given the tight fit. Link to comment

RMweb Gold The Fatadder 18,296 Posted November 23, 2009 RMweb Gold The etch comes with a pair of stainless steel mesh rings on one fret, and a slightly thicker brass fret which contains the brass ring for the top of the grill, the main fan and the 7 other parts for each fan, The fan construction starts with folding up the fan blades, there are then 2 * shaped spacers that go above and below the fan with the cutouts clearing the distortion that comes from twisting the blades. Below this you fit two more spacers (each with a 2mm diameter hole in the centre to aid fitting), and above you add the detailed layer (a centre boss plate and an overlay for the bolt detail in the centre. All of this was superglued together in about five minuets. Once they were dry I then glued them onto the 1mm diameter pegs on the Vi Trains fan insert (having earlier removed the old fans.) You would get a better fit if you drilled out the Vi pegs and replaced with some 2mm diameter rod, but tbh I didnt really see any need to. the 56 grills were a lot cheaper (around the ??6 mark if I remember rightly), but that doesnt come with any etched fans.
