TTA slurry tanks pt 2

The Fatadder

Last night I finally managed to get into the workshop and get on with the slurry TTAs

The first two wagons are now complete, pending a coat of paint, transfers (which I need to draw up and commission from Railtec) and walkways (more on which later). They were of course the easy ones…

So I have now made a start on building the more difficult version with the Gloucester suspension. I started by preparing the bodies in the same way as I prepared the other two, adding replacement ends and re-profiling the floor. On to this I built a new solbar / headstock from Evergreen strip, fortunately I had the right size of U channel available from doing a similar chassis conversion on a Railtrack PNA a long time ago (thinking about which I ought to finish it…)
Once the 4 sides were glued in place directly to the Hornby tank, Bill Bedford suspension units were added along with Cambrian plastic springs for the details. The former are a little more fragile than the usual Bill Bedford etches, but have done the job, but I think if I was doing it again (and didn’t have one last set of this design to use up) I would just use the “modern W iron” instead.

The hand brake leaver was added from the scrapbox (my guess is Parkside looking at the quality) and the discharge gear was cobbled together from Evergreen rod (as it was for the other two).

I still need to finish the end which is a slightly different design, the point has already been filed flat, but looking at photos it appears that it needs a raised circular disk. This has been drawn up and just needs to be ran through the silhouette cutter. I just need to draw up another building to cut at the same time.

So this takes me to the walkways, I now have 4 STS TTAs (detailed Triang bodies on Bachmann chassis) as well these three slurry tanks. In addition I need to model a TCA bogie tank and I have the TDA bogie tank which currently has a walkway formed from two Bachmann TTA parts. In short it’s a lot of walkways all to different designs. I have previously drawn up the ex Bowaters walkway, but I need more photos to see what the others look like (as there is rarely a view looking down.) If there is space left on the sheet I will also add on a replacement mesh for the Silver Bullet. Once drawn up I will be checking the cost in comparison with fabricating from Scalelink mesh and will take it from there. In the meantime, the priority is to get on with building some track!
