Cautious Beginnings

Hello there, okay basically the situation is thus: about a year ago Model Rail's George Dent published an article called desert rat. Within it Dent converted an old Lima train set diesel shunter, formerly a fictitious dockside shunter, into army shunter. I decided to the same as Dent had done previously, i.e covert a similar model into an industrial shunter. I would like to stress at this point that this is my first modeling project proper.

Anywho I eventually choose a colliery shunter to be the alter ego. So for my birthday this year I received-to my surprise- biggrin.gif a slightly battered but sound Lima shunter, thank you Dad, so far I have removed the numbers, lining and the No 1 end chevrons with nail polish remover but it has since been( if you'll excuse the pun) shunted for school, as I said before the model is a rather lucky find there is very little wrong with it:

Its major faults are:

  • a infinitesimally small crack in the buffer beam.
  • the wheels are quite dirty.
  • the motor, a pancake, runs but won't for much longer.

all in all very quite minor, its the motor that I imagine will be the biggest headache. once again any help that can be offered will be greatly appreciated. sorry about the lack of pictures, I don't own a camera.

Disclaimer: I do not own Model Rail or George dent.

The Lima motors while a bit 'rough and ready' are generally pretty hard to kill, unless the brushes wear out, or you go breaking windings on the armature. I was taking them apart to clean fluff out the gears and black oily cr@p off the pickups from age 10, no harm to motor or me

You could look to fit some sort of replacement mechanism in there, black beetle or similar.

I also seem to remember Neil Rushby having a go at one of these online somewhere - may have the wrong man, but go googling, see what you can find.

And have fun B)

Sounds like an interesting project but I think you'll need to beg, borrow or steal a camera to keep us updated!

Re: halfwit, indeed, but thats not all. here are a few other... probelms:

  • a lack of a layout, I do have one but its currently leaning against a shed wall.
  • a cronic lack of tools(none)
  • and the small matter of my higher exams

Who needs a layout?

All my locos live in a display case in the dining room! They do occasionaly come out for a run on a length of track though... But then I'm mostly a loco builder.

As far as tools go, buy the best that you can afford. Saves replacing an inferior tool later.

I really liked the conversion in the mag, and I'm looking forward to see what you come up with. The great thing about starting with a battered borderline non-runner is that the only way is up, really :)
