Trying to keep the customers satisfied

Ballasting is coming along nicely, filling those long winter evenings as well as the gaps between the sleepers.

Meanwhile, I did promise an update on the D49, and have been reminded of this in a comment to an earlier post! This loco has now been chipped and substantially painted. I'd originally painted the cylinders with a brush. This looked absolutely awful next to the loco itself. So they were cleaned up and sprayed, having first masked off the wheels and motion; they are currently just in primer. The bogie also needs attention. Here I will blacken the frames (as per the main loco frames) and then brush paint the wheels.

So thats it so far:

The picture file is fairly large, so it's worth clicking on and enlarging it. Remember, this is 2mm:1ft.

More after the seasonal festivites no doubt!

Nothing brings out the flaws like a single colour spray job..... I've been staring at the enlarged picture for ages and can't see any! It is a real credit to your skill, Tony.

Like Bryn said, this really does deserve a real good look; but one question - should there be balance/counter weights on the driving wheels?:P

You've done a very neat job on this Tony. Just one thing, did the Lentz gear fitted D49s have non-standard smokebox doors? Only the standard ones had the hinge on the other side didn't they?

Yes. There are quite a few "bits" still in a tiny needle case awaiting final addition. The balance weights and the tender/loco fall plate are among them.

You are right. Unfortunately, I only realised after the paint had been applied. The smokebox door is glued on. Do I try and remove it and risk the paintwork, or do I leave it in the knowledge that it will only be spotted in photos and then only by eagle eyed buffs?

It is a dilemma, but it comes down to whether you will be happy looking at it if you don't change it. If you are then nobody else's opinion matters really.
