Curing my fear of woodwork

as an update to my last entry, here's how the boards are shaping up:

The sub assembly of glueing and screwing the trackbase and sea bed to the stripwood formers has been completed on all the boards now, thanks to some help from Cornelius today!

Here's how it looks now:

And with the track templates to show how much (or how little, if you want to look at it that way) of the layout will be taken up by track.

I'm going to call a halt to the baseboard construction now until the alignment dowels arrive as I need to drill the holes for them next before fixing the end plates on each board, and before they go on the bracing sections of 2x1 all need adding, then finally the backscene and front fascia.

Hi Tom, do the boards use the fascia and (presumably) integral backscene for longitudinal rigidity?

I meant to comment on your last entry to the effect that they appeared to be lacking any longitudinal timber.

You might be afraid of woodwork, but trust me, that's a damn sight better than mine!

Hi Jamie,

Thanks :)

Yes, the backscene and fascia are integral. When it's all screwed and glued together there's no way it's going anywhere. I've tried twisting it in several directions and It's having none of it. The backscene is fixed at both the top and bottom of the cross braces, so plenty of support longitudinally.

I agree with Jamie, your fear of woodwork seems to be totally unfounded. Looking great.rolleyes.gif

Thanks, I've just found it a little unpredictable to work with in the past, and having to create something which aligns perfectly every time you assemble it seemed a little daunting. I'll have to do a little tweaking here and there to get everything spot on, but I'm pleased with how it's going so far.

Looks like the new project is sitting on a firm base! I'll be watcing with interest as it develops.

Thanks Markus and Ian. The baseboards are perhaps a little over-engineered, but I'd rather that way than too flimsy.

the boards look fit for purpose, better too heavy than drop to bits:

yeh looks well proportioned from here! - the sensible thing for operation would have been to be on the shorter side, but given the nature of the project I think you get less water area and more scenic expanse this way round, which is good.
