The yard lineside hut and storage container

Well I know they aren't much to look at, even in 7mm, but the yard hut and container for the layout are now more or less complete. As with the others, painting will take place at a later stage. As usual here follow the real / model photos.

The yard hut in 1995. Photographed by Dave Sallery. In use by the looks of it as the window shutters are open. Does anybody know what the pipes entering it behind the sign are for? Water, electric?

The same hut now drab looking , all locked up...I wonder why? If anyone can "shed" some light as to what this is (or was) used for please let me know.

And now the model. The outside light has yet to be glued in place after painting:

Constructed in plasticard (laminated 40 thou) with brass wire for pipes. Paper superglued to roof then scored to represent the layers of felt.

The equipment container as can be seen in the background of the photo. I'm presuming this is used for relays or signalling equipment?

Note the eyes at the top to allow it to be lifted by a crane:

Hope you like them!

Whilst here, have a look at a talented fellow railway modeller and graphic designer Michel Subrenat. Although being French, he lives in Portugal and his website http://www.msa-modelisme.eu/ shows his skills. One of which is creating his own etched kits.

Hello,

This is all looking very good indeed. Have you got a JLTRT 37 in RR livery to run on the layout yet?

I believe the hut was a PNB point for ballast train drivers.

Hello Tom,

Thanks for your comment, so I'm guessing there is possibly a "throne" in the shed somewhere then? As for the 37, I haven't anything in Regional railways livery yet unfortunately. I've still got two 31's to finish yet. Were you planning on doing one soon?

Hi Howard,

I've got no plans to do a RR one yet. I wouldn't mind doing 429 or 420 at some point but I think mainline blue 37 198 will come after I've got my 33, and the HJ 47 cab replacement completed.

I'm sure there was a 'throne' of sorts in there :D

Thanks for the links. I was lucky to be able to get on the roof of 33 053 armed with a tape measure and camera so I have all the dimensions, even the spacing and size of the bolts :) I'll post some pics soon when it gets to a state worth showing. It feels like 1990s modelling (correcting all the issues on Lima products with detailing parts). The difference being you now get a super drive, a bigger model and the basic shapes are correct.

That hut was used by the train crew & the shunters Trevor & Robin up till around EWS lost the stone contract to Freightliner in the early 2000's, shunter now when it runs comes on the train but as its hardly run in the passed year since Manchester Metrolink stone contract finished.

Around the time of your layout train crews use to change train crews at the Junction, with Junction men working the train into Pen sidings.

We use to have the TOPS print out for the train consist sent to us (at Llandudno Junction SB) on the old NTN printer, then relayed to shunter, as Pen Box had no Fax machine or TRUST till the last ten years.

P.S. I was also passed out on my rules by my old Block Inspector in 1985 in that hut before going to the box to be past out.

Hi Stu,

That's fantastic info! Anything else you can share info wise on Pen would be appreciated (mishaps, stories, photos etc...). It will all come in handy when the layout is exhibited.

Thanks
