More on the Bridge (New Layout Morfa Bach)

Some progress, not a lot, but some progress!

I have almost completed the bridge, it still needs some more colour dry brushing as I'm not satisfied with the grey, It seems to have a blueish cast to it, so more work is needed here. Handrails need making and fitting.

The main purpose of this entry though is to show where it goes on the layout.

Over on the right hand side!

I had to get the bridge built and the track laid on it because that sets the datum for the height of the rest of the track bed and the cut out in the side of the layout for the scenic break.

The bridge track is laid on longitudinal timbers with tie bars and timbers as per the prototype.

I used C&L chairs and code 75 bullhead rail for this job.

The prototype had an unusual check rail that consisted of bullhead rail mounted horizontally outside the running rails. This was mounted in special chairs which are not available in model form, so, I'm still considering my options on this.

I have also made a start on what will be the river bed, using cork in two layers with cut aways for the deeper part of the river.

This is very close to the estuary and I think it will be modelled at low tide. so not too much water to model!

More as and when.

Cheers for now

Thanks Mike,

I have since added a better shade of silver grey and toned down that blue hue.

In reality it's not that bad, I think a lot of the effect was due to low light level outside when I took the pictures.

On with handrails next!

A lovely bit of work there Frank, I like your idea of modelling the scene at low tide with plenty of channels and pools. Have you ever tried the card peeling technique for building up sand and mudbanks, it really works a treat ?

It would be nice if this new layout could one day become an extension of Pen-y-Bont ?

Cheers Mate

Really nice piece of work there, Frank.

True, but the mud will be an interesting challenge: I look forward to seeing how you do this - if your workmanship matches that on the bridge, then we are in for a stunner!

Re the colour: have you tried a thin (5% paint) wash (or washes) of gunmetal?

Hello Simon, Long time no speak!

Thanks for your comment and input, I never thought about using gun metal wash so may give it a try.

Having said that I have since given the structure another dry brushing with a better shade of silver grey.

Re the mud, i have got an idea that i have seen used by another modeller so I'll try his method first.

I'll post more when I reach that stage.

re my workmanship, If it turns out as well as Pen Y Bont I'll be happy.

Cheers!

TBH, I use it all the time to create the impression of weathered creosoted timber. If you use the metallic stuff, you can get some interesting silvering effects!

So will I!

Having just seen your update, I must say that is gobsmackingly good.
