A wartime Grange 6829
One of the key requirements of modelling the post war GWR is to ensure the loco fleet contains plenty of stock still in the wartime black livery. Now ideally I would have access to documents listing the last visit to the works for the GWR fleet from which I could determine if a loco had visited the works after the war or not.
Sadly I don't have anything like this, so I'm left with a combination of antidotal evidence (the black pannier), photographic evidence (Kingsbridge no. 2 BSet) and guess work.
This project falls under the latter, I have found a photo in 1947 showing the tender type and that it had G W R branding. Colour wise it's hard to say, there is no distinction between the colour of the body and chassis (but it's heavily weathered). Anyway in my version of 1947 it's black....
Further more research on other locos has shown that in a lot of cases locos had the window plating removed and windows Refitted without a repaint.
So this is the condition I have modelled Newton Abbot based Grange 6829.
The tender (3500 Collett) has only been sold with BR liveries, so a BR Black release picked up off eBay with minor damage for a bargain price was the obiovious choice.
Tender logos were removed with Microsol (not too difficult on this one), new logos were added from HMRS transfers(as were the bufferbeam numbers). Etched plates will follow once I place my next Modelmasters order...
The rest of the work revolved around the removal of the smoke box number plate. First I removed the steam lance (and promptly lost it) and the smokebox dart. This gives a lot more space to work.
With a new blade the number plate and top smokebox door bracket were carefully carved off, before finishing up with wet&dry paper. A new door bracket was added from evergreen strip.
This loco is at the top of the weathering pile, so I'm not too worried about the damage to the paint finish. A quick dusting of satin black before I start will blend it all in.
So here's the (almost finished) loco, double headed with my other Grange which still needs an identity. I have yet to find a photo of a green Grange with the smaller Churchward tender in Devon during my period....
