2800 basket case part 2

So tonight after a little more track work, it was on with the 2800. I am starting to think I need to only have DCC fitted locos in the garage as the non fitted stuff is proving too much of a distraction!

Anyway, back on topic...

As previously mentioned this model came via eBay from a trader who often sells damages locos for a bargain price (well at the time I thought it a bargain, now not so sure having recently bought a 3800 for a similar price that is DCC fitted...). The loco to tender wiring connector was snapped, the tender a mess, a cab hand rail missing and a large crack in the roof.

The roof was fixed yesterday, the tender replaced with one from my part P4ed 3800 (which will eventually get the basket case tender), the wheels from the basket case tender were swapped over but appear to be too large a diameter. I now need to find where I put the 3800 originals...

The main job for tonight was the wiring
The initial plan was to hard wire a gold decoder in the boiler, and forget about the tender pickups. However looking at the clearances between the body and motor I got a little nervious about reassembally and decided instead that I would hard wire the loco to the tender.

Other than an age trying to find a short in my wording (a track gauge left on the branch platform that I currently have wired for DC) it was a pretty smoove process. The only slight difficulty was getting the decoder in the smaller tender, I. The end resulting in the removal of the weight. Must remember to add some lead when I coal it up (and weight the boiler while I'm at it!)

I now need to work out a suitable identity, at the moment my 3800 is a not particularly useful South Wales machine which I have yet to decide if I will renunber. The austerity is from Laira, the 72xx Newton Abbot and the 42xx is a St Blazey machine en route to NA works. As such I am torn between another local loco or whether I should go for something from further afield...

Edit: After finding a 1947 photo of 2846 on Dainton bank on the Colour Rail website, this will be the loco's eventual identity. I just need to get round to placing the order for the number plates for this (and a handful of other locos) as a custom order with Coastline Models.

The tender wiring in the 3800 tender was a lot better quality than that on recent Hornby production, to the point that the redundant connector was chopped out and will now be fitted to one of my Kings...

I can only think of two eBay traders in that category:

"flossytusslepot", and "flyingwarship". The former is still trading, and I was quite amazed at how quickly he could get hold of very broken models, even the recently-released ones; the latter has been dormant recently.
