More castle renumbering: Spitfire pt 1

The Fatadder

While I wait for my latest order of plates from Modelmaster, (this time covering King
George V, Beenham Grange and of course Spitfire, once again taking advantage of their 22% off code.

So having received another Wellington as a Christmas present, it's time to start the renumbering.

The actual renumbering can wait until I receive the plates, but I have made a start on the tender. Clearly Spitfire needs to be modelled with a 4000gl Collett tender rather than the Hawksworth supplied. The soloution to this came to me on eBay over Christmas, with a recent Hornby Castle BR tender top sourced.

This is to be mounted on the 'pre production' tender chassis that i purchased a couple of years back, missing the buffers, details and sides to the chsssis. Today's job has been building new side frames for it.

I started by removing a complete side frame off a Hornby King's tender, this was used as a template for cutting the new frames. Fortunately there wasn't much glue holding it in place. (While it was off I took advantage to remove the rest of the lining off the original frame.)

The new frame was cut from 40thou black plasticard, a section of 1mm strip was added as a spacer to aid locating the completed frame (I didn't bother with the location tabs). It also assisted in locating the cast springs, (Finney sourced at scaleforum a few years back on the bring and buy for a pound!)

Finally the brackets were scratch built from some more Evergreen strip.

Moving to the tank top, the BR late crest was removed first (after Shirt Button this is the second easiest to remove in my book). A missing handrail was added to the front, along with regluing the rear handrail. The tool boxes are missing and still need replacements (likely to be scratch built from plasticard) along with a missing step/lamp iron.

I'm not sure if I will add the G crest W logos yet, given the need to repaint the toolboxes etc I am half inclined to paint this tender black and then use the tender from the Star (suitably rebranded) for Spitfire. The latter just needs me to source a BR Star at the right price (which will be painted black as 4025 without its name). So if anyone has a Hornby star in poor condition let me know...

I'm also in need of a brass bell for King George V if anyone knows a source...

While working on preparing the loco, the bufferbeam number was removed (transfers are not yet added) the cabside plate printing reduced in height (and those troublesome rivets cut off) and the etched plates were removed awaiting their replacements. While it is off the model, I took a quick photo of the plate against a ruler in order to hopefully draw up a transfer to replace the mounting plate between the splashier and the nameplate (thus eliminating the annoying 'castle class' plate that shouldn't be present on Nunny), not that I have a clue about drawing transfers...

Nice work on the tender there! Very good. Have you thought about looking for the bell from an American source. They are a requirement for US steam locomotives so they must be available I would have thought?

All the best,

Castle

Worth a look I think,

I had ment to ask on the forum first before ordering plates, but modelmasters promotion ends at midnight and I didn't want to miss it...

My other option is to try asking Hornby of the park from their KGV is available as a spare...
