Spitfire pt3

The Fatadder

After a little bit of a break from stock work while I focus on the layout, this evening I have been trying to finish off 5071.

As previously mentioned the tender shell purchased for use with 5071 was not in great shape paint wise, and was resprayed black for my Star. This left me with a BR early crest tender to rebrand to G crest W.

I have used my usual method soaking with IPA and then scraping off the remains, but as I have found previously Hornby have certainly changed they printing to something much tougher to shift. The end result had far too much scaring to the base plastic for my liking, cue a lot work trying to repair the damage.

I started off polishing the area with Microsol as a lubricant and very fine wet & dry paper, it was then a case of adding thin coats of GWR green (sanding back each time to blend in.)
Eventually I got to a finish that was just about ok, (but annoyingly not quite as good as the finish on the original tender). Once finished I then applied some HMRS transfers and sealed with a coat of Halfords satin varnish. Annoyingly looking at the finished model the transfers have started to lift at the top. So now its a question of trying to fix (im thinking a dab of GWR green on the end of a cocktail stick applied behind the transfer). Or try and remove them and hope it doesnt spoil the varnished finish.

Speaking of the finish, what a difference a coat of satin varnish makes to the tepid Hornby GWR green. The photo below had rather poor light, but if you look closely at the tool boxes on the tender top (which have not been varnished) you should see the difference a little clearer than the difference between loco and tender. I am thinknig that a coat of satin varnish will be the first step of the weathering process in order to give the colour a boost. (the loco for 5071 certainly needs it in order to match the tender.

With all of this done, a DCC decoder (gold) was fitted and the loco is now almost ready for testing...

Finally one more job still to do, finally get round to painting the lower area from BR green to black!
