County Chassis

The Fatadder

As a break from working on Centenaries, today I have been working on the County chassis (the wheels for which arrived with the Centenaries.) Given the chassis frame was built rigid, and I am building in OO, I have decided to try the Markits wheels along with their screw crank pins. The latter were chosen because I do not like having to solder the rods in place.

Initially I was disappointed with the wheels, given the price I had expected higher quality. There was a lot of flash around the axle hole which took a lot of work to get a good fit. However once cleaned up they are a big improvement over the Gibson product, especially given how easy they can be removed from the chassis and refitted.

Once the chassis was free running I switched attention to the bogie, which was quickly soldered up. The only issue was a slight mistake on the bolt connecting it to the stretcher bar, in that I accidently soldered the nut to the bolt! Trying to remove it I sheared the bolt, but there was enough left to solder the top section directly to the bogie.

Next up will be the cylinders and assembling the gearbox.

Edit: I’ve used the wrong bogie sides! Stupid mistake, I had googled County bogie and the photo I had chosen to work from was not a county!
