Goods stock

Like everything else I have shown here, most of my goods stock is in varying stages of completion, though none are actually complete...

To kick off this section, here are a couple of early GWR brake vans built from variations of the ABS (formerly D&S, I believe) kits. I am starting with these because they have been mentioned in a couple of threads in recent weeks (hereand here), so some people may be interested in seeing them close up. The kit is available in two forms. The first represents the early pre-diagram 10 ton van with a timber outside framed body. In this form, it has earlier buffers, wet sanding pipes, and a simple 4-shoe pushrod type of brakegear much like a conventional wagon. The brass tie-bar is a late addition to the build after I realised it would not unduly interfere with the compensation and needs painting. Otherwise, this is one of my most complete pieces of stock, needing only a number, a depot name and some weathering to complete (unless I've missed something...)

The second kit uses almost entirely the same parts to produce the later rebuilds that were given the AA16 diagram. In this form, they had self-contained buffers, dry sanding and 8-shoe clasp brakes. There is still some work to do on the interior and the roof, and the buffer springs and heads need to be fitted. The latter were made by drilling out the ABS castings to about 2mm and fitting a small length of suitable brass tubing on the shanks of the Alan Gibson buffers. Although not shown here, this gives an effective representation of the thicker shaft on the GWR self-contained buffer. It also looks like I need to tone down the rather bright orange rust on the brakes and underframe.
